In other words if I want the RES but don't want leather, can the OEM system be installed after the purchase? Is it available independently like from H and A, etc.?

So go aftermarket, like so many other people have done--quite successfully. There are literally hundreds of posts here on the subject, plenty to keep you busy for hours researching the aftermarket DVD products and installations.
