Well I got a response from Honda Canada to my letter on why we cannot get RES in Canada. Surprise... surprise.... it doesn't say much, but I have cut the text here for those that are interested.

--------------------------------
This will acknowledge and thank you for your letter received on August 30, 2001 regarding the 2002 Honda Odyssey.

We are sorry to hear of your disappointment that the Rear Entertainment System is not available on the 2002 Odyssey models and can assure you of our concern.

We have forwarded your suggestion to our Product Planning Division. They have informed us that the possibility of having the RES available in the Canadian EX-L Odyssey is currently being investigated, but at this time, we are unfortunately unable to confirm when this feathure will be included in the vehicles.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write to us. We wish to express our gratitude for your support .... blah blah blah.

----------------------------

This was sent from a Dave Arseneau (Customer Relations Specialist).... in case any other Canadians are interested in sending in a letter about this (I can also provide the fax, address and text from my letter to cut and paste).

I was kinda hopeing for an explanation at least as to why they don't offer it here... didn't think it would sell.... didn't think we could meet demand in the US and Canada.... something.

Ah well, doesn't give me a warm fuzzy that Canadian kids will be watching DVD's in their Odysseys anytime soon... guess I will have to wait (and hope) for an '04.

Cheers.... Gary

Sounds to me that their Product Planning department did not expect there to be demand in Canada. Or maybe they are concerned on the cost increase that would be passed on to you the consumer, which would impact sales.

Just a thought.

You can always get an aftermarket one unless you don't like them. I talked to 2 dealers here in the GTA and they install aftermarket units - Richmond Hill Honda and Hwy 7 Honda in Woodbridge.

I thought about going aftermarket but given that Honda build the vehicle I want I don't see why I should have to. Also as I put in my letter to Honda, will the aftermarket model be covered by the Honda warranty? Will it be a fully integrated solution like the Honda model?

To be honest I am not that concerned right now. My company has me working in Toronto for a while, so I have brought my family with me and they are renting me a van while I am here (I actually lucked out... in a way... the van I got is a Windstar with the VCR entertainment kit).

While that is happening I don't need to spend my own money on a van (although I would be tempted to if the RES Odyssey was available). I am pushing more to ensure that the RES is available when I am ready to buy.

I went for a test drive today, and the sales guy told me that the RES would finally be available in Canada. They were expecting delivery in about mid-March '02 and already had 5 orders.

Edit: Is this old news?

Yeah, I got a call from the Honda Canada rep last week to let me know that RES was coming to Canada (haven't had access to a computer to post). He indicated that they would be manufactured in March with a late March early April delivery.

He also indicated that only 3 colours would be available (SS, MB and RRP) and that MSRP is $39,100.

Now just gotta find the time to get to a dealer!
