I have an 2K1 GG Odyssey and we got the Space Cadet. It retails for $289.00 and you can get it at REI. There is no negotiation on price b/c shipping is expensive. My advice is to go on REI.com website and click store locator and see at the store. It holds 15.1 cubic ft and it is square in size. Thule boxes are long and you with have your hatch obstructing it. By the way the honda racks components (bike & ski) are made by Yakima for Honda. Both are in California. If you are IL www.lickbike.com will be cheaper but they will not ship. The best place to get it is REI....Why????.....B/C if anything go wrong with it REI will replace it for the entire 3-year warranty period. We were leasing a Subaru Outback last year and got the Yakima Rocketbox at REI. When we turned in our lease for the Outback I found this Cargo box to be too big. REI swapped it out and refunded me the difference. You can save 10% if you join their club at the store so it will cost around $262 + Tax for the Space Cadet. Hope this helps

I'm looking for a luggage box for my EX and am considering the Thule Mountaineer. Will it get in the way of the rear hatch?

I'd like the Thule Classic 601 because Consumer Reports just said some nice things about it but my local REI doesn't have it in stock and I want it by 7/12.

If anyone has a strong reccomendation on a luggage carrier please reply.

Thanks,
Eric

I bought a Thule Mountaineer box a week ago.
It fits the Honda Odyssey EX perfectly. I used Honda's factory crossbars.

I did have to drill four holes in the box. Each hole I drilled is just rear of the three pre-drilled holes in each corner. For example, take one corner of the box and you will see three holes in a line. Each hole is say two inches apart. Add a fourth hole two inches rear of the third hole. I had to do this so that the rear hatch would open fully without hitting the box. There is now a half inch space between the box and the rear hatch when open. I will post a photo soon.
I think it looks awesome. Comes in handy too.

Thanks for the info RDU2000. I pulled the trigger and decided to go with the Thule Evolution 1600.

It's not quite as long as the Mountaineer so it fits on the Ody and allows full opening of the hatch without modification.

Same capacity, 16 cu. ft, but it gets there by being taller and wider.

It also comes in an attractive silver color and aerodynamic shape which looks neat.

Here's a link to it.

I'll try to post a picture somewhere.

It would be nice to get a gallery of Ody's with most of the available luggage carriers mounted so that folks could see what they look like and what kind of space they take up.

I have found the Yakima racks at rutabaga.com and they want $280 period. No freight if you pick it up at a truck terminal. However-when I discussed the Yakima Space Cadet with them, and the Thule boxes with a Thule dealer, I was told I would need their rerspective mounts as they would not guarantee the box because there was a "chance" the factory rack could not stand the "lift" created by the box nor would they be responsible for damages to my car or any other should it be struck by my rack if it came loose.
Is this just more hype to sell their mounting systems?

Regards
Al

albaby,

That is an interesting comment. I have a Space Cadet also and am interested in more information on this as well because I had pretty much decided to go with the Honda bars because they are about half of the setup cost for the Yakima.

On a side note, I wonder if you asked them if you used their mounts and bars if it came loose would they cover any damages, including medical bills. My guess is that they would say it was user error and put it back in your lap.
