check engine light help

I've looked and will continue to search, but to date I haven't found what I'm looking for. I'd like to know how to clear the check engine light.

my '98 (107k) threw a 3rd cylinder misfire code. I worked on the car and it seems to have fixed the problem... was running rough and now seems to run super smooth.

I need to have the light cleared to go through emissions. Is this something that can be done at home?

thanks.

Normally that code will clear itself after a few drive cycles if there are no problems. You should have the codes read again and ask them to clear them. You need an OBDII code reader or scanner to clear them. Some auto parts stores woll rean and clear them for you but some aparently won't clear them. After clearing you need to drive it a few days before inspection as there are tests that have to be complete before it will pass.
Thanks, Will. Yeah, I'm heading out to AutoZone to get it checked again. I know AZ will not clear after reading since it's against the law.

I'm not looking to skirt the law, I just wanna know if there's a way to clear the light at home. I have another car and a series of turning the key and holding the odometer button, you can clear out the lights after your maintenance.
