Hi guys just an update, I went to the Honda dealer where the transmission shop brought my van after the transmission was swapped. I wanted to confirm that the software update was done. They did confirm that the update was done, and service advisor said that what I was describing was "somewhat" normal operation of the van. They said that if you perform a rolling stop , the ecm , could get confused as to what gear it needed and then slam into gear. They did say that it could be something else wrong, but what I was describing was pretty normal. Thanks for all the advice, I may be looking to trade the van in for something else.

The OP did not give miles on orig transm or miles on 2nd transm and previous transm oil changes. Also did not include why 2nd transm was put in. Based on my very similar symptoms with my 2014 LX when purchased at 22k, and upon reading the TSB and this forum on other 4th gen owners having same issue I guessed it was the short life of the DW-1 transm oil. History of the 2014 showed no previous drain/fill. So I did the 3x drain/fill which immed decreased freq of jerking into 1st/2nd gear but still had the jerky shifting occasionally. I then found out bout the muzzler so installed that at 35k and began changing transm oil every 6 months for next year and half and had no more jerky transm behavior. Then found out bout the transm software update so got that done. After that update at approx 45k miles, and continuing with freq dw-1 changes have had very smooth shifting with no surprise downshifts/jerky transm behavior. Current miles 60k with no issues with vehicle living the easy life in temperate SoCal. So my guess is it was solved in my case by freq dw-1 changes and the muzzler.

Bought the vehicle a year ago, with about 90,000 kms on it. It started jerking and brought it back to Honda dealer, since it still had some warranty left on it. They did the 3X drain and fill , and update computer program. It didn't really do anything , even after leaving the dealership it jerked. I went back numerous times after that and of course they said they couldn't reproduce it. Honda warranty expired, so I started using my third party warranty.

My mechanic referred me to a transmission shop, where they said that the shifting between 2nd and 3 rd gear were "out of spec". They got a transmission from another 2015 Odyssey with 75,000km. They put it in and then brought it to a local Honda dealership to update the software for the new transmission. Seemed to be ok, when weather was warmer, but since it got colder , its been happening again.

I wish the van would throw a code or something, at least problem could be diagnosed. Driving me nuts! At least the wife drove it the other day and she felt it jerk, after someone stopped short in front of her. When she went to accelerate it jerked the while van. Before that she thought It was me causing the issue.:D:D:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I know this is an old thread, but I can’t help but notice the similarity to my current situation. 2015 Elite. Got software update, changed trans fluid regularly, added trans cooler, with most recent fluid change I added lubegard, changed transmission filter, muzzled VCM, changed pressure switch, A, B, and C. Now, it has started banging into gear going from 2nd to 3rd gear again. I’m pulling my hair out (not much left to pull either) and my contempt for Honda grows regularly. Is this just the reality for these 5th gen vans?

Living a parallel life to most on this thread. Had transmissions issues since 42k on a 2015 oddy, multiple trips to the dealer to have firmware flashed then gave up on them and changed out coil packs when they failed, fitted the VCM muzzler, been drain and filling the trans 3x per session 2-3 times a year, changed the fouled plugs (often) as the ECO mode would foul them within 15k miles and replaced the shift solenoids. All those changes made some marginal incremental improvements but without fail on cold (Texas cold so <55F) or damp morning after about a mile the van starts smashing into 2nd gear so bad i had to replace the engine mounts last year. Then the most annoying part is that after cycling power the van drives perfect so i have to think its electrical at this point. The van has 208K on it now but what a total PITA it has been to own as a daily driver. Has anyone got to the bottom of this or is this Honda trans just a total dog like the Mazda M5OD ?

gonna say your active motor mount is effed...

mine is shot even with the muzzler installed for multiple years... clunks like hell through the up and down shifts.
the pre muzzler days gave it the sausage.

was lifting it on the hoist the other day to do the winter tires and oils hood opened.
when I stopped the lift, the motor was bouncing around like it was on jello mounts.

another thing to change on the old gal.

Thank you Sir and you are correct the motor mounts were trashed and replaced this summer. At this stage the van is running like a swiss watch with the exception of cold mornings when after a 1/2mile the second or third upshift from 1st to 2nd about outs me through the windshield. power cycle the van and its perfect for the rest of the day..... crazy behavior and am resigned to the fact that this is the new normal. Anyone else have an idea why the van runs perfect after cycling power ?

Other than the cold morning hard shifts, did changing the mounts make a big difference? I've had other cars that crap their pants when the transmission gets confusing input. If the engine mount is the the key, that would make sense. When I changed the timing belt a little bit ago the upper mount was absolutely trashed. I visually looked at the others, and they looked fine, but I didn't do any serious diagnosis.

changing did make a huge difference but the hard shift remains. and if the top mount is torn then for certain the lower ones are wrecked even worse in my experience. put you hand on the engine and you will feel it move easily if they are bad.
i miss spoke in the chain above and believe the hard shift is from 2nd to 3rd so i'll dig again and see what i find online about that condition.
