For an Odyssey without HDMI, is there any way to connecto an IPAD to the RES so that we could watch videos stored on the IPAD on the RES?

I would think this is a wrong forum to ask the question. The real question is "Is there a way to have the iPad output the audio/video in the A/V out instead of HDMI?"

If you can get the iPad to put out the audio/video in coax out, you should be able to connect that to the RES aux in in the third row and make it work.

Don't have an IPad but if it's like my Xoom you can use a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable and then an HDMI to composite cable to get normal A/V outputs. It'll all depend on what type of of output the IPad has.
You need the same Apple composite video cable discussed in this thread:

It's the same cable used for iPods, iPhones and iPads. I have used the cable to play videos from my older iPod to the RES without any problems. The cable is available from the Apple Store and many other retailers for around $40.

Apple Composite AV Cable - Apple Store (U.S.)

Since there is a USB connector on the cable, you can also get the USB power adapter to keep your iPad charged while using it.

Thanks. This looks like it will work.

Oh, the A/V cable will definitely work and Apple pockets another $40 from you.

The older iPod Video had the video signal in the headphone jack. All you had to do was buy a cheap third party A/V cable from eBay for $5.

Apple caught wind of this and realized they could make more money if they output the video encrypted through the dock connector. Then they created some expensive new A/V cables with a built in chip to decode the video. Since around 2006/07, it's been this way with all their devices.
