You need the same Apple composite video cable discussed in this thread:

It's the same cable used for iPods, iPhones and iPads. I have used the cable to play videos from my older iPod to the RES without any problems. The cable is available from the Apple Store and many other retailers for around $40.

Since there is a USB connector on the cable, you can also get the USB power adapter to keep your iPad charged while using it.

Oh, the A/V cable will definitely work and Apple pockets another $40 from you.

The older iPod Video had the video signal in the headphone jack. All you had to do was buy a cheap third party A/V cable from eBay for $5.

Apple caught wind of this and realized they could make more money if they output the video encrypted through the dock connector. Then they created some expensive new A/V cables with a built in chip to decode the video. Since around 2006/07, it's been this way with all their devices.
