Well I'm picking up our white 2015 ex this Friday and already I'm thinking of coolant.

It has 140,000kms.

I normally use prestone all makes in just about everything. Any real reason to avoid this?

Or should I just bite the bullet and go oem....I hate their prices.

Thanks yall

I've had good experiences with NAPA coolants. They have the blue one for Honda, It should be fine. Last week it was on sale for $15. Prestone should be fine as well, but NAPA carry ones specifically for Honda.I would use a garden hose to force out all the old antifreeze before adding the new stuff.

Use OEM formula coolant. Don't use the prestone "green" fits-all generic coolant if possible.

You can get OEM formula coolant inexpensively - Beck Arnley makes one, as does Pentofrost (I think it's the A2), and Zerex Asian. These are all very similar to the OEM formula and will have no problem getting mixed with the OEM coolant that's currently in the van. That's one reason you don't really want to mix coolants if possible - you can't drain it all out, so you're just mixing the new with the old.

I think I have Pentofrost A2 in mine. It's the same blue color as the OEM coolant, and is basically 98% the same thing.

Just do a simple drain and fill if the current coolant in there is blue. You should never introduce tap water into a cooling system - distilled water only if necessary - but I doubt your van needs a full coolant flush unless the coolant is brown or something weird.

The coolant gets changed every what, 7-10 years? The OEM stuff isn't THAT much more expensive when you spread any extra cost over most of decade.

Honda's OEM coolant is top-notch stuff - going aftermarket to find something better is a waste of time. And when you combine that with never having to worry about compatibility with the old coolant (having a rear heater core means that flushing out all of the old coolant isn't as easy as it is on most other cars) or the rest of the cooling system, I think going OEM is a pretty easy choice.

Honda OEM coolant is around $20/gallon at my dealer.

Here in Canada it's over 40.....I guess I'll grab some when I pick it up.

Thanks everyone.
Honda does not use 2-eta, this is what's in prestone.
I'll stay with oem.....for once😁
There are other fluids and maintenance items where going non-OEM is perfectly fine (and sometimes better) and lots of Odyclubbers will tell you this - we're not slaves to Honda or "drinking the Kool-Aid" or whatever phrase people like to disparage with. Oil, filters, ATF, brake fluid... there are some really good options out there instead of OEM.

But the engine coolant isn't one of those. The Odyssey's cooling system as a whole is very robust and taking good care of it requires practically no effort at all. Just give it what it likes. :)

Flushing, as with a hose, is a bad idea unless done to deal with an identified problem that caused coolant contamination. Since Honda only sells pre-diluted, it can be very difficult to get the system back up to 50/50 mix (or the 55/45 often needed in Canada). I guess Honda sells small bottles of concentrate, but it's hard to determine how much water you need to "offset" with concentrate. Don't make trouble (and expense) for yourself for no reason.

I would not be changing the coolant at all at this km. The coolant gets changed when the water pump gets changed at the timing belt service. As I always say, if you want to lavish extra on a Honda, change the transmission fluid. You get something out of that. And muzzle the VCM, you get something there as well.

What is the change interval for this fluid? - - - I thought in Canada it was 5 years.

Yes, it's every 5 years after the first change, which is after 10 years. It's the same for normal or severe service.

BTW, it's 5 years or 96,000 km (60,000 mi.) whichever is reached first.

Buy the blue Honda Coolant from the dealer. It's not expensive, works very well, and the system holds less than 2 gallons. Only change it when the Maintenance Minder tells you to. Otherwise, save your money and leave it alone.

Just picked up 2 jugs for $22.04CDN each.

Dealers set their own prices. Call around.

BTW I would have paid $40 too for OEM; but I'm more than happy to pay less.
