I just did a complete ATF flush and refill on my 2000 Ody as some people have suggested on this board. Previously, I did a drain and refill at 45K and the infamous “3X” drain and refill by a dealer around 95K. Now the car is over 130K and I started to feel little sluggish lately. The whole process took less than 3 hours including a Magnefine filter installation. Here are the pics. Many thanks to all those people who’ve posted HOWTOs on this project.

Parts needed: case of Honda Z1 ATF (12), Magnefine filter, 2 hose clamps

Tools: screw driver, hose cutter, 3/8” drive ratchet, ½” drive handle + long extension (>12”), 17mm socket, [not in pics:] oil drain pan, measuring bucket (enough to hold 3qts), 12” clear hose (3/4” in diameter), roll of paper/shop towels

Remove the plastic splash guard on the bottom of the engine compartment. Use a screw driver to unplug bumper and fender plugs.

Remove the ATF fill plug using a 17mm socket with long extension. Newer Odys or rebuilt trannies may no longer have this fill plug. Use the dip stick tube instead for refills.

Use a ¾ driver ratchet to remove the transmission drain plug.

Drain ATF. Slightly over 3 Qts should come out.

Clean the gunk around the magnetic part of the drain plug and screw it back in with 36 ft-lbs torque.

Refill ATF. Pour in about 3 ½ Qts.

Cut returning ATF rubber hose on the driver side. Don’t do this if you’re not installing a Magnefine filter. You can simply remove the hose from the ATF cooler.

Insert one end of the clear hose over the factory hose on the radiator side. The other end should point to the measuring bucket.

Pretty cool that Honda has an external AT filter. I thought it might have been one of those screens inside the case.

Thanks,
Steve
Well, yes there is an external AT filter, but most Honda dealers don't know about it and the service manuals don't reference any replacement service for it. Plus, it is apparently a pain to get to.

I'll know more about that in a couple of weeks as I am going to change out the external AT filter, and add a magnefine filter too.
Before installing an overhauled or remanufactured transmission, the service tech must thoroughly clean the ATF cooler and lines to prevent system contamination. Failure to do so could cause a repeat transmission failure. The apparatus used is an ATF Cooler Cleaner that cleans the ATF cooler with high-pressure, heated ATF. This cleaning action melts down waxy varnish residue left by burnt ATF and purges metal particles, clutch materials and other contaminants. This apparatus uses 2 magnetic spin-on filters to trap purged contaminants. Further proof that the installation of a Magnefine in-line ATF filter is worthwhile.
Good, because I've been putting off the replacement of the Honda AT Filter.:yuck:

I will get to it one of these days though

Your transmission has a filter. The 99-01 four speeds did not. So adding one for you is a convenience, peace of mind thing, not a necessity. As to warranty issues, Honda actually adds a filter when replacing the four speeds.
Are you sure???
They did not do it in 2004 when my first tranny was replaced... maybe this would give me some ammunition with Honda...Is there some bulletin documenting the addition of the filter?
The Service Bulletin #98-061 Autiomatic Transmission In-Warranty Exchange Program states on page #4 that "13. If there is no in-line ATF filter currently installed, install the ATF Filter Kit included with the remanufactured A/T..." If they did not install a filter then I wonder if they cleaned out the ATF cooler, hoses and lines of debris before installing the new tranny?
Please note the differences in the 99-01 four speed transmissions and the 02-04 five speed transmissions. The four speeds do not have a filter and therefore get an in line one when they get replaced. Everyone lumps these very different units (and replacement protocols) together.

Please help me! Where can I find the bulletin? when was it issued?
I have to run for an interview...maybe I'll need the car soon...

sorry, another Q..
what cars does it apply to?
I have a 99 ody
Applies to all 1999-2001 Odysseys. The Service Bulletin is in this thread:

I made up my mind.
1.I will add a new filter
2.I will do two flush and fills with DextronIII
3.I will replace the filter
4.I will do a flush and fill with Honda ATF

Hopefully this will get rid of the jerk...I have no warranty so....it's worth a try

I'm not sure that I'd introduce the Dextron into the tranny. That could save a few $$ but introduce other problems. Simply buy a case of the Honda ATF and hope for the best.

Adding the MagneFine filter should also be helpful.
I want to put a magnefine filter on my 04 odyssey. Which line is the return line to the transmission and is there a photo showing the location? Thank you.
Easy to find

Its the line closest to the drivers side fender... Really short/ Goes straight from outlet on radiator right back to transmission...

You can see it in the installation directions for the atf cooler..

I have it on my 04 and think I maybe be the first one to have installed on in both the ATF and PS lnes...
Thank you bbylon5.

I did installed both in July. Does that count? :D

Interestingly enough, the PS fluid still seems stinky after multiple times of sucking the fluid out of the reservoir and filling it up again.:(

I think I'll do a tranny drain/refill at the 15K mark next time...that'll be @ 75 K miles.

You got me beat!;) :D

Now, lets hope the trannys hold up well.
Pictures on first post are not showing, anyway to access them?

Yes. Does some one have the Pix? I need to flush and put the inline Magnefine filter in my 2001 Accord V6LX and am desperately seeking a How To with pix.
Pictures are back. The flickr site changed the location of pics. :)
