I've been fooling around with backing up all my purchased DVD movies. These are my findings:

Ody 2002 RES
Windows XP Pro
P-4, 2.6 Ghz, 1.5 Gig RAM
NEC ND-1300A, firmware 1.0B DVD writer

DVD Authoring Programs That Work/Don't Work:

DVD XCopy/DVD XCopy Express - Works for the Odyssey for some burners/authoring software/media types; a hit/miss situation, mostly will NOT work most of the time in the Odyssey but will work almost all the time in the stand-alone home player and PS2 game console (not sure about XBox); not worth the effort/time/$$$ trying to figure out the right combinations that will make it work in the Odyssey

DVD Decryptor - Works (free Shareware) www.dvddecrypter.com
DVD Shrink -Works (free Shareware) www.dvdshrink.org
Nero Recode - Works www.nero.com
Burn At Once (BAO) www.burnatonce.com

Media that I have tested that DO work using the above authoring/burning programs listed above:

TDK DVD-R 4.7 GB 2X
Memorex DVD-R 4.7 GB (no speed listed but believe it's 2x)

Waiting to test Ritek G04 4.7 GB 4X Matte finish. I will post this results when I get my shipment.

Please update this posting with machine specs, OS, DVD burner model and authoring/burning programs that you know will work in the Odyssey RES, thank you.

I know that the media I posted were tested before. I did do a search on the forum before making my post; I'm only reposting because the posting from my search on this forum was rather long and I got the impression that people were trying to make DVD XCopy work when I know already that it's pretty much a waste of time, effort and money even though some Ody users have been successful in getting DVD XCopy to work in the Ody.

New Sony Dual-Layer DVD Burner

I think a possible "clean" solution would be to get one of the new Sony dual-layer DVD burners. I saw these internal drives advertised for $200 from CompUSA.

I think that DVD X Copy doesn't work because it's designed to compress a DVD (dual-layer 9GB) onto a CD-ROM (700MB) or a DVD-R/+R (single layer 4.9 GB). The compression algorithim may work with some DVD players and not others.

I have never successfully been able to rip/burn a DVD movie using DVD Xcopy, never gets past the DVD XCopy logo whether the movie is DVD-5 or DVD-9 size movie.

I also gave up on DVD XCopy because of it's limitation:

-can't make a back-up from a back-up, your original source may be damage (kids play wth the original and scratch them)

-lost of the menu function (with DVD XCopy Express) a good/bad thing, some people like the menus for bonus features, trailers etc, games...

-DVD XCopy can either rip with/without the menus

-Studio321 which is the maker of DVD XCopy can no longer sell the version of XCopy that can remove the macrovision from DVD movies so bascially it's a program just for burning like Nero Recode

DVD copy media

After trying many media I found one that works. Ritek G04. You can find it at ebay by searching for ritek G04. Im using a TDK 440N drive, DVD Decrypter to rip the movie, and ifoedit (sort of complicated) to remove the menus so the whole movie fits on one disk. Also I use NERO to burn the disk. The problem I had with other disks was the movie skipping and stopping.

I want to take back what I posted earlier on medias that I thought worked in my '02 Ody.

I just used the same media you are speaking of Ritek/Ridata G04 Matte finish and they appear to be working without sutter, skip or freezes. Are you using Matte or Silver finish? I think the Silver finish may be a little cheaper in cost than the Matte finish.

I'm using DVD Shrink 3.17.6 the latest version and burning with Burnatonce version 0.99b and I also use Nero Recode occasionally if I need to remove menus etc...

I'll check EBay, but I've been buying my stuff from www.shop4tech.com and www.supermediastore.com, ~$71.00 per 100 and free shipping.

I have used Ritek DVD-R 4x media, both the silver top and the inkjet printable tops without any problems on any DVD player we own. I have also used the CompUSA labeled 1X DVD-R media, in fact most of the DVDs I use in the Ody right now are this type. They also work fine. I have burned them with Sonic MyDVD, DVD95Copy, and Nero Express under WinXP home. Cendyne (Pioneer) 4x DVD-R burner. Never a coaster.

Probably the first 25 DVDs I made I would write to Memorex 1X DVD-RW first, just to make sure it would play in my main home DVD player (knowing that DVD-RW do not work in the Ody player). I am so confident now I go straight to DVD-R.

On thing that I have never gotten to work correctly is 2X Pioneer DVD-RW media. It works fine for data backups, but no movies I have ever made work on this media.

I have the DVD XCopy Platumn addition, which includes the Xpress version, and it has worked perfectly for me.

The keys to making it work is the you must have the right DVD burner and the right blank DVD. From my research in some
DVD forums, as well as my own DVD burning experiences, the DVD burner to us is the Pioneer A05, A06, and the A07. The black DVD to us the Riket (4X speed).

I spent too much time and $$$ figuring out XCopy, it is very easy apps to use however.

Looks like the Ritek G04 DVD-R is what the Ody likes for media. Alot of good reviews on your Pioneer unit, there's also alot of firmware updates for this particular model also.

Thanks for the updates.
