Easiest way is if it has a sunroof then it is an EX.

Won't running the VIN number on CarFax or AutoCheck will be the easiest? Sometimes, even LX have sunroofs and it is pretty easy to modify just about anything in the LX to make it closer to EX. Even EX can be converted to aftermarket leather seats to make them look like they are EX-L.

this is the easiest way. an ex comes with 15 inch alloy wheels and painted side moldings but these can be changed on an lx. the ex has power height adjusting drivers seat as well. I think but could be wrong, that the ex comes with tweets under the small grills in the dash where the lx has none under the grills.

there was only an ex and lx from 95-98. the only one that had factory leather was the prestige in Japan.

The LX did not come from the factory with a sunroof, not even as an option. The sunroof on the EX is made of metal, not glass. There are no aftermarket sunroofs that are made of metal to the best of my knowledge. So if it has a sunroof made of metal that slides up over the roof then 99.9% chance it is an EX. If it has no sunroof or any kind of glass sunroof, then 99% chance it is an LX. We won't get into the EX mod of replacing the metal sunroof with a glass one from a Civic. Extremely rare mod.

From my Odyssey shop manual Chassis and Paint Codes:
JHMRA184*TC000001
JHM - Honda Motor Co., passenger car (mine is JR2 for Isuzu)
RA1 - Odyssey/F22B6 body and engine (mine is RJ1 for Oasis)
8 - 4 door station wagon w 4 speed automatic (mine is same)
one digit Vehicle Grade or Series 4, 6, or 7:
4: LX 6 passenger (2nd row captain seats) (this is mine too, top line LS model)
or 6: LX 7 passenger (2nd row bench seat)
or 7: EX
Check digit
T - 1996 model year
C - Saitama factory in Japan (Sayama) (same as mine)
finally 6 digit Serial Number.

Aparantly, Canada only had the LX?(4 or 6), and an additional Vehicle Grade of 5: 7 passenger without ABS. And serial numbers start with 8.

I get confused as to which is the top end model. On my '80 Accord, LX was the high end. My Isuzu LS (vs. S) seems to correspond to the LX as still being the top end.
As I recall, Captain Chairs, Sunroof, and 2 way power seat (useless- no lumbar or other adjustments?! just up/down) were the main items available only on the top end LS.

Over the last 30+ years in the U.S. Honda has used a basic model level designation of DX, LX, and EX. A few models here and there have skipped the DX designation such as the Odyssey and CR-V. The DX denotes the lower end for a model and the EX the higher end. For example the Accord DX traditionally would be bare bones with no power locks, windows nor cruise control. The LX would come with power locks, windows, cruise and ABS as an option. (We are talking 90s models here) Then the EX would have all the LX extras plus alloy rims, sunroof and ABS standard as well as a better sound system. Things have changed some now since all the safety features come on all the model levels just about.

When I bought my Accord '03 LX, they had the same designations. DX still existed then. Also, I remember that in Canada (got family there), the EX-L was being used as the model trim, long before they started using it here in the USA for Hondas.

No. Mine is an ex and it has leather seats from the dealer. 95.
Most likely that was a dealer installed option. Not from the factory. Many dealers will have a local shop install leather seats. I had a '99 CR-V with dealer installed leather. Never was an option from the factory in '99 for the CR-V.

EX Honda vehicles have a sunroof and power windows, LXs have power windows only, DXs have hand crank windows. Different trim level designations usually indicate different 4 cyl engines, so it's important to know what you're drving.

I would assume that an EX came with rear disc brakes where as the LX came with drums. Correct me if I am incorrect.
As for the Odysseys, both LX and EX models have 4 wheel disk brakes and ABS. Very cool. So you are not getting more safety features on the EX, just more accessories.

1 of reasons I love these vans!

So to revive a dead-ish thread since there are no other threads that I found from searching to appease my curiosity.

EX
Power Driver's Seat
Sunroof
Quad Captain Chairs

LX
PW
***and none of the above ever?

I'm looking at a 95 Ody with second-row bench, but I haven't gone to look at it yet *being two hours away* there is no place to actually see a side-by-side comparison of options for the LX and the EX is there?

Everytime I think I've figured it out, I see a complete contradiction to what is and isn't. This van has the OEM roof rack option, which I was told was only for EX models, but since it has the second-row bench it has to be an LX. I can't see the roof on the front where the sunroof would go, so I don't know about that either. Does anyone know where I can find a definitive breakdown guide of factory options/etc?

Everything was available for the LX trim package, for a price.
I have heard of LX's with a Moon roof.
I have not, however, heard of any EX's without a moon roof. Nor have I heard of one with a mid bench seat.
The only way of knowing for sure if it is an EX, or LX, is to run the VIN number.
Your insurance company is the easiest way of doing this.
