Don't change the oil before 7500 miles.
When we got out 04 last year, we went on many trips to quickly rack up the miles before the first oil change. Today I just left the van at the dealership to do the second 7500 miles service (at 22,550 miles on the odo).
The 7500 miles service costs $49.95.

Good points all, about resetting the oil change minder early.

I, too, would reallllllly like to know what happens to the other service counters: Do they get reset when the oil life minder is reset or do they march to a different beat?

AP

I would be shocked if they are tied together. That would really be bush-league if the service reminder is not completely separate -- 99% sure they act independently.

I talked to one of our lead techs and here's the scoop.
Honda recommends oil changes any time before 10% oil life left.
This does not affect the light for any other maint needed.
Owners can decide for them self if they want to do oil changes before that or not.
There are lubricants in the engine during assembly that is an advantage to keep in longer than 3,000 miles while the engine breaks in.
There is no set time or miles that this should remain in you engine but more than 3,000 is advised.
The tech told me that it should be there at least 3,750 miles and that 5,000 to 7,500 would be fine as well.

GoodSonOdy,

Thanks for the update. I just want to make sure when you say, "Honda recommends oil changes any time before 10% oil life left.
This does not affect the light for any other maint needed." you are referring to the scenarion where changing the oil and resetting the reminder does not reset the "timer/countdown" for the other maintenance services.

Thanks,
AP

GoodSonOdy - If that's the case then, my MID was showing "Service Due Soon - A1" indicating a oil change and tire rotation were needed. The dealer reset the light and it all dissapeared, how would I have been reminded about rotating the tires if they had only done the oil change? Do they have an option to only reset the 'oil' part of the reminder then based on what you say?

If the light was on for both then both should have been done. When the light is on for what ever reason then if it is reset it assumes all was done that it recommened.

GoodSonOdy,

To ensure I understand correctly:

1)If it was only asking for an oil change (has anyone ever seen this? only oil change, no rotation or other service included?) and it was reset, the other "counters" would not get reset.

2)If it was asking for an oil change and a rotation, but only the oil was changed and it was reset, it would assume the tires were rotated and would start "counting" from zero again.

EDIT: Please read this with the next message. I didn't want to edit this one while someone might be replying to it. Thanks. END EDIT.
Thanks,
AP

EDIT2: Reply from GoodSonOdy:
1: The only counters that would reset it what that light was on for. If the light is on for an oil change and tire rotaion then it would reset for both of those if you did either one of them, both or neither.

2: Again, it would only reset for the what ever that light is on for and nothing else. If that light is not on for the tires then the counter for the tires would still keep going.
END EDIT2

GoodSonOdy,

3) If it wasn't asking for anything, but the oil was changed and then it was reset, the other services "counter" (rotation, etc.) would not be reset.

Thanks,
AP

I drive an EX and not the Touring edtion so I'm not real sure which one is which.
However, it is not asking for rotation and you do the oil change it will not reset the counter for the rotation.

Change the oil when your MID tells you to. If your going on a long drive and are going to go over the alloted service interval, change it before you go. Don't forget to reset your MID after changing it.

I got a postcard in the mail last week from my dealer saying their records show my 05 Odyssey is due for service.
I called the service department. He said disregard the postcards. They're sent out automatically on all vehicles, and they haven't gotten around to taking into account the Odyssey's "Mind of its own" :)
He said just do what the MID says.

Cheers,

I agree 100%.
Our dealership sends those out too. The mailing program is set to estimate your miles driven and guesses when you are around 3,750 miles. Then the computer kicks out an email or a postcard and there you go.
I tell my customers to either wait for the light to come on or do it when they feel it's best if they do not want to drive that many miles between oil changes.

My dealer sat down with me and told me that I should follow Honda Canada's schedule for 99 Odys and on!.. They gave me a copy of that... oil changes ever 6000km, timing belt at 96000km, spark plugs and auto trany every 48000 km... go figure!. They're not happy about loosing the steady stream of income!.

Do you really mean to change the transmission, a typo, or a joke?

Not sure. :D

The original poster said he will have 5,000 or more miles by the time the trip comes up. The trip will add another 2,500 to the original 5,0000. Seems like that is not at all changing early, but changing right on time.

Wow - one never knows where a topic will lead! My thanks to you all.

The whole idea that the oil shouldn't be changed until approximately 7500 miles has always concerned me as it goes against both my instincts and past practice. Even if it does have some sort of special break-in oil (or additive), I simply don't see how the motor would not be broken in by 5000 miles.

I had no idea where the "oil life" percentage came from and am somewhat surprised (and not reassured that) it is nothing more than a formula of some sort.

Since I plan to rotate the tires at every oil change, 5000 miles (the way I drive) seems prudent all the way around.

That I won't need to worry about the damned thing while on vacation is an added bonus.

Instincts have nothing to do with science, and as to past practice, have you ever had a Honda before? Old Hondas weren't "broken in" until they had 15,000 miles on them. I'm sure it won't matter if you change on a 5k schedule, but "what you've always done" may not apply to a vehicle that you haven't always had. It is pretty well established that there really is break-in oil in it, and that the oil life meter is very acurate. When it comes on seems to vary quite a bit around here, suggesting that it really does make judgements based on many parameters. As long as you are not dumping the oil really early it's not going to matter. I know that I would want to have the thing on a lift before I took off on vacation. But in either case, you won't have to worry about it on vacation.
