Hi guys,

Has anybody found a good aftermarket strut for the '05 - '10 Ody?

I'm not having a lot of luck finding any.

Cripes, it's not like they didn't make 8 kijillion of these vans. :)

Thanks,
Mike

It's strange that I just got an email from Tirerack about the new KYB rear struts for the Ody. Why would they only make the rears ???

Well, I'll be! I just went and checked the KYB catalog and they have front struts for 2005-2007 Odysseys, parts 339221 and 339220, both available "3rd quarter 2011".

With these and the Monroes, if they ever become available, we'll have options! :)

Good to hear. Though I haven't seen any sign that our struts/shocks gone bad I can't wait to upgrade them. The Assurance ComforTred Touring while being soft and quite, sort of degrade the handling of Ody due to the very soft side wall.

I agree. The tires are very soft and you really need to go with a shorter sidewall aka lower profile tire. I have aftermarket 18s and a low profile and it is tolerable, but I have a taller tire on my Jetta and hate the tire's wobbly ride especially on the highway.

Well, FWIW, the 349091's are being superceded to a 349105 as soon as current stock is depleted. Also, per KYB's site, not applicable for PAX Tourings on account of the weight of the run-flats but would work on De-Paxed vehicles. No plans at this time for a different damper rate for the PAX equipped vehicles.

I have 2 basic questions re KYB:

1. Is it better than Honda OEM?
BTW, who makes the Struts for Honda?

2. Is KYB "stiffer" than Honda?
I want a stiffer ride but not sure if this is the case for KYB.

Just FYI,
while the back shocks are applicable to 2005-2010 vans
the front struts are only specified for 2005-2007 vans

Interesting,

So for FRONT struts, 2005-07 are different from 2008-2010?

On Bernardi parts page for Ody up to 2007, under chassis you will find diagram for Front Shock absorber listed as (-07) (I read up to 2007)
05-06 Ody EXL R&N has front struts as parts
right 51605-SHJ-A04
left 51606-SHJ-A04
and each is only 138.88 plus s/h

07 Ody EXL R&N has front struts as parts (only last two digits differ, and I think it is the same part)
right 51605-SHJ-A31
left 51606-SHJ-A31
and each is only 138.88 plus s/h

From 2008, the same diagram shows Front Shock absorber (0:cool:
right 51605-SHJ-L31
left 51606-SHJ-L31
and each is only 142.22 plus s/h

So I gather couple of thoughts from this:

the fronts struts were changed for 2008 and KYB at $109 are very little savings over OEM, unless they prove to be better than OEM.

the rears OEM are around $100, so KYB at $40 are a nice saving.

IMO. KYB struts should be better than OEM. This is due to an aftermarket company will compensate/consider for spring-sagging over time.

The KYB Excel-G are marketed as OEM ride quality. This is not a performance strut.

Sigh, if only KONI had tooled up a "yellow" for this thing...hell, I'd even take a set of "red" inserts, if that is what it took. :(

KYB's are ok, my experience with Monroes was pretty lousy. I'll prolly go with the OE's when I need them.

Do we even know who make shocks for our van. KYB used to make shocks for Lexus and some other brand so I wouln't be surprised if our vans use them too.

I don't know for a fact, but just pure speculation.
If KYB made OEM parts, would it take them over 6 years to bring their house brand to the market?

May be because to avoid conflict with Honda and it would take about 6 yrs before owners look at changing out the shocks. But of course, this is just talking for fun, not based on any facts.

Anyone seen the struts yet? I don't see them yet on Tirerack or RockAuto.

I emailed RockAuto a week ago and they said they hadn't received them yet and that they would go to the website as soon as they had them.
