Hopefully the parts are manufactured in the USA or some place other than Japan. I have the feeling there is going to be a parts disruption shortly. Owners of Japanese cars will have to avoid accidents and major parts requirements for a while until the supply chain gets sorted out. While our vehicles are assembled in the USA, there are many parts that are not manufactured there.

Once the light comes on and the cap is tightened it takes several drive cycles for the light to go out. It is not an instantaneous check. You should remove the cap, inspect and clean the seal and fill tube, tighten at least three clicks and then drive for several days to reset the light.

My check gas cap light came on on the way home from the dealer. First visit they cleaned the carbon canister and some associated lines. That didn't fix the problem. Some other parts were replaced today. Not sure what was replaced but will post after I see the paper work. But seems to have fixed the problem.

I'm no mechanic so i'm not sure what all these things are so here goes...

FP- Number Description
36162-RMX-A01 Valve Pur Cont S
36166-RKG-A01 Joint Purge
17011-TK8-A01 Canister Set
17311-SWA-A01 Valve Assy.

These are the numbers and descriptions that are on the Honda invoice. They seem to have fixed the problem. Hope this helps. And good luck.

I had a loose gas cap and code, even though I contentiously tighten the cap. I noticed some white plastic shards in the fuel filler nacelle, which I suspected were parts of the ratchet mechanism. I was able to tighten the old cap a bit more past the end of the ratchet point by exerting axial force on the cap. I ordered a new cap from Majestic.

When inspecting the new cap, I noticed that I was unable to turn the ratchet while holding the threaded portion in my hand -- even when applying a lot of force.

I did the same test on the old cap and was able to turn the ratchet with ease -- so you might want to do this test on your gas cap.

For new cap cost of $14 from Majestic, this was a no-brainer maintenance item.

So I bring the car in this morning. I print out the parts list and explain that this has been happening to other odysseys. Indicator still on. They call me an hour later. No light is on and that it took X amount of miles for the light to reset. So I pick it up and drive away about ten miles down the road- bang- light comes on. Turn around and the tech cant believe it. I ask if it could be the charcoal canister. His reply" NO way". So i pose the question. " whats the problem?" The answer I get is " I have no idea, leave it again". well I couldnt leave it again due to time, so its goin back wed morn. Ill post the results. Knew it couldnt be that easy

Car was brought in this morning. So it turns out the charcoal canister was contaminated from the factory. I told them the first time to look at that b/c of what I read on here. They ignored me. Need new parts. Honda corporate is gonna investigate the problem. Supposedly new parts will be here tommorow. This is the second time the cars been in and I dont forsee the parts coming in tommorow . Are they coming from japan or are they in supply at the assembly factory here in the states? Does anyone think my payment this month should be pro-rated? I mean the problem started 5 minutes after I pulled out of the lot. Anyway if this happens to anyone else now " we " are armed on this forum with the knowledge of this issue. Thats why forums are powerful.

I experienced this headache, but my dealer got it right the 1st time. It wasn't the canister being contaminated. I was told it was defective. Additionally, there were a few other parts that were replaced.
The headache was taking it in a couple of times. However, the service/tech dept. at my dealer was top notch. NO EXCUSES regarding their service.

I had mine happen that very night after purchasing the van...around 9PM..when the dealership was closing. Of course, the salesman says it will go away, but it turns out I had a few defective parts on my Ody.

I was considering turning my Odyssey back into the dealer due to several issues that I've experienced since owning the van. However, the boys love the van so much- I stuck it out...patiently. Now, I have no issues whatsoever...and I'm very pleased with owning the van.

I don't think "pro-rating" your car payment would be wise regardless of any warranty work that is needed...All it will do is hurt your credit...(Potentially).

Hang in there. I've been in your shoes. The only thing that irks me is your service dept. acting all knowing...and shooting down all the other owners who experience these issues. That would be the most annoying part of the whole ordeal.

I had the exact same problem, when the car was driven back home (Odometer: 56 miles). It never went away, now it has 281 miles and after 3 repair trips. I filed complaint with Honda America. They don't care a bit. The rep did not return my call until I called them again after 3 days. When he called, he wouldn't
even acknowledge it is Honda's fault, let alone any help at all. I hang up with him.

The car is still in the shop, with less than 300 miles. This is definitely a lemon. I would suggest file complaint with your state general attorney's /consume protection office. I am still trying to replace with another car. One more repair it is legally a lemon!

My check gas cap light came on the way home from the dealer. Read and followed the manual and waited to see if it would go off, it didn’t. First visit to dealer they reset the sensor came back on within two miles. Second visit they did a smoke test to check for leaks reset sensor. That didn't fix the problem. Read the other posting talked to dealer about it, they replaced the following: 36162-RMX-A01 Valve Pur Cont S,36166-RKG-A01 Joint Purge and 17011-TK8-A01 Canister Set. That seem to do the trick no more flashing message.

Argh...

...it took 4000+ miles (and the first oil+filter change) later for our gas cap warning light ("please tighten fuel cap") to come on. Am hoping it really just a simple several drive cycles and reset resolution, as opposed to a dealership visit (or multiple visits) resolution. Will post an update several drive cycles later, I guess.

Am very happy to report that—after removing and re-applying the gas cap and after several drive cycles, all within the same day—the gas cap warning light has reset. I am hoping that this is it for our Ody.

After installing a new $14 gas cap, I noticed the buildup of crud on the mouth of the metal gas filler tube.

There is no doubt that the coarse surface of the crud, which built up over time, compromised the sealing of the plastic gasket inside the gas cap.

I cleaned the sealing surface with some steel wool and alcohol until smooth and applied a smidgen of ShinEtsu silicone grease. This resulted in a much smoother closure for the cap.

You might want to run your finger over the sealing surface of your gas filler tube to check this.

Fuel Cap Warning Message Stays On or Intermittently Comes On
Applies To: ’11 Odyssey

Got a fuel cap warining message (TIGHTEN FUEL CAP - Touring models; CHECK FUEL CAP - all others) that stays on or intermittently comes on, and there are no DTCs? You might have charcoal dust restricting the EVAP purge flow. Here’s how to find out for sure and fix that problem:
1. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve, and tap its inlet a couple of times on a sheet of white paper.
• If no charcoal dust falls out, reinstall the purge valve. Then go to ISIS and do the Fuel Cap Warning Message System Troubleshooting procedure.
• If any charcoal dust falls out like you see here, you’ve got a charcoal problem. Go to step 2.
2. Replace the purge valve, purge joint, and EVAP canister. Replacement canisters don’t come with a vent shut valve, so make sure you transfer the old one to the new canister.
3. When you’re done, blow out any charcoal dust in the purge line between the canister and the purge joint, and the short hose between the purge joint and the purge valve.
If your dealership doesn’t have these parts on hand, have the service advisor contact your customer and schedule a repair visit. Let the advisor know that the vehicle will drive just fine even though the fuel cap warning message might come back on.

Honda released TSB 11-067 "CHECK FUEL CAP Message Comes On Repeatedly Without a DTC" to address this issue. See the 2011 TSB sticky thread for details.

I have a 2011 Ody with "Check Fuel Cap" warning that comes on and goes off intermittently. I took my Ody to Honda dealer who refused to fix the known issue based on the salvage title.

Can anyone help me with a solution? Should I just order all 3 parts and replace them one at a time, hoping the message goes away? Can anyone chime in who has had this intermittent message that was fixed repacing a particular part? TIA
