I have a pretty strong gas smell I notice when stopped in traffic or at a light with the window open. In sniffing around it does not appear to be comming from the fuel fill area or under the vehicle. Nor do I smell it when approching the vehicle when it is not running. Seems to be coming from under the hood. Looking carefully with the engine both off and on I cannot see any gas or wet area but do smell it.

The car runs fine with no engine codes stored. It is a 2000 with 162k miles. Anyone know of any problem areas to check out?

Thanks,
Telstar.

No codes stored? Hmmm.

Check the injectors, O2 sensors and cat converter (should have given a code though) and the fuel sending unit on top of tank. How is your MPG lately? Do you top off when filling up? The fuel filler neck is known to crack and cause a leak of fuel or fumes. Again, they should have provided a code.

I check around the tank and filler and do not smell it there, only comming out from the front engine area. Regardless of how full the tank is.

I suspect maybe around the injectors or fuel rail although I cannot see anything. Maybe the orings have dried out? I cycled the key a few times too figuring that would pressurize the system and looked and listened but did not see anything. It does seem strongest just below the throttle body when running but I was not sure if that was just from the gas actually running through it or not.

By no codes I mean I have not seen the light come on at all. I do have an odbc connector and software for the laptop so I may as well hook it up just to be certain.

I do not top off the tank and mileage has been constant over the life of the vehicle at around 22mpg.

Thanks,
Telstar.
