Halfway between SF and San Diego, I filled up gas on a Chevron gas station in I-5 and noticed a 2011 Ody
owner fiddling around inside his minivan.
With his children and wife getting a little nervous I walked over to
ask if I can help out. He said his shifter won't come out of park and been
trying to for the last 30 minutes without luck. He had called AAA and while waiting, he was just trying to see if there's anything quirky and
see if he can fix it himself.

I read somewhere that this is a problem with the 2nd generation Odyssey and immediately thought that it may apply to this newest version. Sure enough it
was the same problem. However the solution has a little twist to it.

Apply the same solution recommended in the 2nd gen Ody but make sure the
e-brakes are disengaged first. The brake switch on the newest generation Odyssey may not have been completely solved.

Although I've never read on this forum this issue applies to 3rd generation Odyssey, I'm getting myself a spare brake switch for my own peace of mind.

Good job helping him out. Sometimes when things like that happen you dont think clearly in the moment and having someone else helps. ;)

Does the 2011 have the ability to put the key in a special slot so you can shift it out of park into neutral and then start it when the brake switch fails?

You know, I'm not sure because I didn't do the work myself. I just guided him.
I asked him to remove the trim plate around the shifter including the cover and see if there's anything that would prevent it from shifting out of park.
I guess there was. He used a pocket knife to push it out of the way and he was able to shift it to N.
