I wanted to test out the NGK look alike plugs from amazon. I even tried to convince myself that they were actually NGK plugs rebranded.........NOPE.

In this pic you can see 3 plugs.
Plug on the left- New knock off plug
Plug center -Knock off plug after 17k miles (notice the electrodes are almost gone, the gap is huge and the grounding electrodes on a couple of them look stretched out)
Plug right is the OE NGK after 123k miles (notice the electrodes and gap are still good)

Stick with the NGK plugs people.

Great info here, thanks. (y)

The fakes are getting better. I recall that it used to be pretty easy to tell, since they would not go through the effort to put the fake-platinum prong on the ground electrode, and the electrode tips (thin, pointy platinum on the real ones) would be noticeably thicker (so they conduct sufficiently well during the first 10k miles while the return period expires) when new.

When I removed my plugs at 105k, they looked perfect, dimensionally about the same as the new ones (bought from RockAuto, have proven to be good). So I saved them, still have them.

I am generally much less inclined to change plugs because of this - the originals seem to last a lot longer than the ~100k spec, and there is always a risk with replacements. As I see it, the main risk of extended use of the originals would be if some part of the ceramic insulator would crack off and damage the cylinder. So at the very least, I might extend the plug change interval by a few 10ks of miles.

I would report the seller to Amazon. Rock auto is the most reliable place to get NGK plugs at a good price. I you can use three plugs, I have three new ones. I was going to replace all 6 plugs. I did the easy ones in the front. Before I could get to do the rear three, my car was totaled, so I have three new plugs.
