Does anyone know if the Odyssey cassette player is unique or is it the same one as the Accord, Civic, etc. I have a friend that works at a car stereo shop and might be able to get me a unit taken out of someone else's car to put in an aftermarket radio, cheap! I need to know if it's special or not or if any Honda cassette will work.

It depends on the year of the car and what particular model. In general, yes, the units are compatible and interchangeable, provided they are the latest generation with the squarish looking connector (as oppossed to the earlier rectagular one).

Lots of people have swapped decks, thus you see some who have installed Accord in-dash 6 CD combo decks, etc.. in their Odys.

I see you have a '99 EX, which means if you switch to any cassette only OEM head unit made for a Honda, you will lose your steering wheel audio controls. If you are looking to add the tape to your existing setup, this will be difficult, as it won't fit beneath your CD head unit, and you will need to figure out how to switch between your CD head unit and the new tape one.

Maybe you are aware of all these issues, but may I ask what you are trying to accomplish? Perhaps I or someone else here could point you to some other alternatives..

What I want is to put the Honda cassette player under my Honda CD/radio. It would be nice to play tapes as well as CD's, but we don't do it often enough to justify spending $135 or so. We hardly even use the CD player. My friend says they take out factory setups, including the extra cassette, all the time so people can put in Alpine, Pioneer, etc. radios with more power, beter features, etc. They just throw them away, I guess. If I can get it free or cheap, I'll do it, but I wondered if a late model Accord or Civic cassette would work just like the Odyssey one. I looked at a Honda dealer web site (don't remember which) and searched for late model accessories for the Accord, Civic and Odyssey. They listed the same part number for the cassette player for each, depending on year, so it looks like it will work.

Likely this will work, but am skeptical that people who actually PAY to add the cassette deck to the factory setup would then junk their "upgraded" system to go all aftermarket. I'd bet it would be hard to get your hands on a free take out "add-on" cassette, but maybe I'm wrong. If it does work out though, that'd be fantastic. Make sure you get the connection cable with the unit, you'll need that.

We have the Honda cassette under the radio/CD in our EX - apparently no problem to install.

I finally got around to asking my friend about it. He says it happens all the time. You'd be surprised the high end factory systems that people yank out. Many times they want to keep their old radios, but if they don't he says the shop just throws 'em out. He's keeping his eyes peeled for me. BTW - it would be free if he finds one.
