Hi

My
van
has developed the following AC problem.

One day the AC just stopped. Fan turned off.
Since then it only turns on in
Auto
mode with the temperature controller set to either max cold or max hot and the fan controller at auto.
But it does not cool.

However, since this happened, about half a dozen time cooling has suddenly started working until i switch the engine off. I havenot been able to figure out any pattern except i think it happens when the van has been left under the sun for 7-8 hours ...

When the cooling starts working, all the controllers dial work as they should but when the cooling is not working then the fans stop when i move the temperature dial to anywhere except the two ends. Same thing with the fan speed dial. Fans stop if i turn the dial to anywhere in the midddle.

Any idea what could be causing it ?

My mechanic replaced the controller panel saying it was bad but that did not fix it. I don't think he has any idea what to do. So before i go to another mechanic i thought i'd ask it here and maybe have a couple of leads /scenarios to present to the mechanic to check.

Thanks for your response.

I think my symptoms are slightly different from what's described in the other posts.

Mostly my AC does not cool but when it starts cooling, it continues cooling just like before for an extended period of time until i turn the engine off. If i turn it on immediately afterwards, it doesn't cool.

I think I have the same issue - if I leave it on (Auto) for about 10 or 15 minutes then it comes on. Have you noticed that?

Were you able to resolve the issue?

I've scoured the forums - there's a lot of good info but most of it mentions the fan only working on High - when mine doesn't work - High won't work either - then all of a sudden it starts working.

Thanks.

We were having very similar problems with our '04 EXL (sporadic loss of A/C, then suddenly no air blowing at all).

We swapped out the A/C transistor assembly under the glovebox as described in several other threads last night and all is back to normal. It's worth noting that it didn't completely fail at first, causing the very confusing symptoms.

If doing the swap, note that there are two sets of 3 screws. The dark colored, hex-head outer 3 are the ones that remove the part.

Thanks - I'll try that and report back.

Does the fan only work on one speed and not the other speeds? Faulty blower motor transistor or resistor depending on your trim. Do a search on "transistor" or "resistor".
