I was thrilled to find out I could control my ipod connected via USB by voice commands.

For example:
- ipod search
- Play genre rock
or
- Play artist Billy Joel
etc.

The downside I'm seeing is that every time I turn on the car it needs to rebuild the voice recognition database for the ipod. So if I'm 2 minutes into a trip and I say "ipod search" I get a message that say something like "Generating voice recognition...." Eventually it will tell me it's done and I can use voice commands, but I don't want to wait 5-10 minutes to be able to do it. That's the length of most of the trips I take in the car right now.

I could probably understand if I was unplugging the unit or taking it out of the car, but I leave it in there all the time. I would expect it to retain whatever database it had built previously.

Has anyone else used the feature and found this to be an issue?

I bet that's what is going on. This morning my ipod was actually frozen. I had to reset it, and then it took it's customary 10 minutes before I could do a voice search.

It's a cool feature, but I wish it was a little more stable in terms of powering off the unit properly.

Right now we mostly only use it to run around on the weekends. But we do take longer (hour plus) trips. We don't _need_ that much music, but we already sync smaller sets to go on our iPhones.

We have an iPod that holds our entire collection, so we can listen to whatever we want to without having to 'manage' it. I just want to leave it in the car and listen to whatever I'm in the mood for, rather then what I've remembered to put into playlists.

We'll probably just stick with the iPod classic. Fortunately it doesn't prevent us to listening to music as long as we want to listen to whatever we were listening to when the car was last shut off.

It takes a few minutes to build the search index to to the search by dial and around 10 minutes for the voice recognition to be ready. I, too, hope they get this straightened out, but from what OdyDudy says it's happening on the MDX so it's been around a while and has not been addressed yet.
