Jack Stand ratings

Ok I'm a newbie and considering buying some jack stands for my Ody. I saw a set rated at 3 tons. Does this rating mean that each individual jack can carry 3 tons or does it mean that the two (2) jack stands together can carry 3 tons, meaning an individual stand can safely lift only 1.5 tons. Reading the box information I couldn't determine this.

I bought a pair of 6 ton jackstands at Wallyworld for $24.95. Sure, they're taller and it may be a bit more trouble getting the Ody lifted up that high, but since it's my (somewhat portly) hide that I'm trying to keep in one piece while I'm working on the Ody, I figure it's well worth the money. I plan on getting another pair next payday to make rotating the tires a breeze.

Look at it like this (if you will). It's a relatively cheap investment that will (literally) last a lifetime. I'm sure there are good reasons (and we're probably about to hear all of them after I post this) why smaller sets of jackstands are better. I have to be honest and tell you that the piece of mind that I get from having those two monsters parked under the van when I'm working on it is priceless.

Has anyone tried those jack stands that have a safety pin in addition to the standard pawl that engages the rack? I saw these in chrome at Sam's with a Goodyear label on them

-- but they were made in Hong Kong like all but Lincoln:

I had a nice Lincoln service jack, but it was stolen.

The chrome plated jack stands look exactly like what I bought at Wal-Mart (only mine are black and don't have "Goodyear" stamped on them). I'm almost positive that it has both the pin and the pawl.

The wife and kids bought me a 3 1/2 ton pneumatic lift jack at Costco for my Father's Day present. Can't remember who makes it and I never knew what it cost, but it's really a nice one.

This may be a stupid question , but where are the best spots to put the jackstands under the van? I'm always worried that they may not be in the right place.
Under the jacking points, just behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels. There is plenty of strength there and it is a good wide based stance.
