My dealer told me that I didn't really need one - the VIN would be good enough to get a replacement key in the event I needed one. Having thought about this it makes little sense to me. An enterprising thief would only need to tow a van, lift the VIN and take it to a dealer lamenting, "I lost my key".

Am I missing something?

Thanks,
dMax

It is true that they only need the VIN. I took my friend to the dealer to get a key for his accord and they cut it, no questions asked.

I did it with my Ody a few months ago and they just needed the vin. I was hoping they would confirm my ID with the registration that i had but they didn't. It made me feel a little uneasy about the whole thing. I was hoping it was just my dealer. I meant to look into it but neglected to do so. Now that I've ben reminded, Ithink I will follow it up.
