LX with: No A/C. No console lights. But with blower control.

My 2000 LX with nearly 200k miles is having similar A/C problems to those described by the EX/EX-L owners with Transitor Assembly issues. However, this is an LX and doesn’t have the auto climate controls described by the EX/EX-L owners.

In my van the A/C would be working fine, and then randomly would stop blowing cold. Blower continued working fine, things just got hot. Upon inspection of the center console controls, the A/C & Heat control cluster would show no selection lights. We attempted to randomly press the buttons (air direction, A/C, window defrost, etc.) to see if they'd toggle the light/selection on/off. No success. Attempted to adjust blower level and both front and rear would adjust normally, and independently. After a period of time the lights would reappear on the control cluster and the a/c would begin working again. This on/off interval continued for several weeks, but when we took it in to the shop it always seemed to be working. Our repairman suggested waiting until it hard broke as to ease diagnosis efforts.

My first thought was towards a faulty center console control cluster, but in many respects it sounds the same as all you EX/EX-L owners who experience Transistor Assembly issues. However, upon inspection under the dash on passenger side it doesn't appear I have the same configuration. (Didn’t find the white connector attached to the part in question, just a much smaller black connector... I don't think they're the same).

Any ideas?

Check the connections of the climate control unit and the unit itself. Does not sound like a transistor/resistor problem.
Problem Identified

After messing around with this thing in my spare time (which I haven’t had much of lately), the wife finally insisted we take it to the mechanic. We attempted to get it in to our trusted local guy a couple of times, but he’s been completely booked lately.

Long story short… I just got it back from the dealer today. It appears the main control unit (part # 79600-SOX-A03) has an intermittent short. Rather than pay the suggested $850 with the dealer, I’m on the hunt for a board. I attempted a parts search on the number provided, but haven’t been able to locate the part through the HondaPartsCheap.com on hondaautomotiveparts.com websites.

Any ideas?
If the connections are good then a new unit is:

Solution Confirmed!

Although this is an old thread, this is the exact problem my 1999 Odyssey LX with manual climate control just had. The Blowers (front and rear) worked on every speed setting, the AC compressor and all LEDs on the vent/AC/Recirc/Defroster controls went out. This occurred once on a long road trip, I stopped, turned off the car, and upon starting it, all LEDs and AC worked. ...UNTIL the return road trip... when the AC was working fine then the vented air got hot, all AC/Vent/etc LEDs went dead and nothing would bring it back.

Since the blowers worked on all speeds, the problem is not the blower relay. I talked to my local mechanic and they agreed its the control unit but the technician was already booked and they had no idea how to do it. But he pulled the instructions up on his mechanic software and it's rated for 1.3 hours labor. Now the part search began.

This problem IS THE AC/HEATER CONTROL ASSY, Part# 79600-SOX-A03ZA for 1999-2004 LX with manual controls (not the Auto Climate Control). NJ Honda dealer #1 wanted $492.22+tx; dealer #2 wanted $428.08 (USD). Online mail order from various Honda dealers was $300-$328 + shipping where I looked.

I called a local wrecking yard/recycler/junkyard and they wanted $75+Tx=$82. Once they got me the right part, I put it in... ugh, the LEDs sort of blinked and I thought the unit was toast. Then I smartened up, disconnected the negative battery cable, left it for a minute, put the cable back on the battery, started the car and IT WORKED!. Needless to say, I'm psyched, my wife is happy we have AC for the trip this weekend, and I saved more than $500. Once I had the part it took all of ten minutes (really) to put it in.

Thanks for this thread -- I would be lost without ODYCLUB.
