I use microfiber towels to dry the van after a wash. But I use cotton to apply and buff the wax. In particular, a cotton baby blanket. I think a microfiber towel would be too coarse for waxing.

Looked around some more and discovered that there are specific MF towels for each job - drying, polishing, and dusting. Those for polishing are much softer than the ones for drying. Now I have the full set.
