I have been trying for 2 days to update my Garmin navigation system on my 2020 Odyssey Touring. Garmin express typically doesn't work at all (comes up, then closes with error message), or operated to 50% then crashes. Tried on Windows 10 and on a Windows 7 virtual machine.

Garmin support via email was somewhat helpful (got me to 50%), but no cigar. My 2019 Garmin Express worked perfectly as recently as March 2022. But now it won't operate, requiring me to update to the new-and-improved-defective version.

Is there a way to use a smartphone to update the maps?

No, the information you put on your memory stick is the only way to put it into the NAVI.

The Ody is very picky about memory sticks, types, sizes and what OS formatted it. Go back a ways and there are some good topics on this.

If the garmin app failed when downloading 50%, then it seems some compatibility issue between the operation system and the garmin app.
Make sure the internet connection is good, and better use a wired connection.
Try a different known good USB, or a new USB drive.
Try garmin app on a Mac. Try a windows machine of friends.
Have a clean installation of the Windows operation system, and try Garmin the first thing after new OS is up and running.
