So I was looking around for the new 2012 Odyssey on Youtube and instantly found this video:
I really like the idea that I get to keep my friends and have fun after having 3 girls (5, 3 and 8 months). This is the only campaign that really speaks to me. The weird part is that Honda did not create it. Wow, people really love the Odyssey. Thoughts on why or who made this commercial. I'm buying one for sure! :DD

Lol, I love the four door, those things were awesome. So nobody wants to answer my question above regarding the video? Where, who, what, how? I don't know who made it, but it says it's not from Honda!

Honda Odyssey 2012 Campaign Experiment - YouTube

This video is getting a lot of traction online from popular bloggers. A Lesson in New Media Marketing | ButlerBlog

Interestingly a lot of the blogs that are talking about this commercial are from marketing blogs rather than car blogs.

Here are a few more I came across this afternoon while doing research to buy a minivan.

Here are the creators (and the reasons behind the experiment):

Honda Odyssey “A Family Man is Still a Man” – Raging Artists

Non-commissioned projects afford us the freedom to experiment. All branded content – commissioned or not – should tap into the product’s target demographic, and with our new video and Website launch for Honda Odyssey, we have endeavored to do just that.

“A Family Man is Still a Man.” This notion came to mind as we were studying minivans for another project. Of course, where research can arm an agency with data, life often provides the actual inspiration to tell a story honestly and with conviction.

RA’s three partners have eight kids and four minivans among them – two of which are Hondas. So we know the family man territory well, and we’ve each carved out our own place within it. One thing we agreed upon as we studied various minivan commercial campaigns is that we were under-represented. Amidst white-dad rappers and forlorn dudes longing for their glory days as garage band heroes, where were the hunters and gatherers, the modern day cavemen whose passions for their families and their friends shared common headspace?

We chose the Honda Odyssey for numerous reasons:

  • We saw an opportunity to appeal to another segment of the minivan buyer demographic
  • We spend a lot of time immersed in car culture and family life
  • We wanted to develop creative that might otherwise not be realized
As our production partner, we chose Tim Damon (Square Planet), a name synonymous with automotive advertising. Along with years of experience behind the camera for every conceivable car brand, Tim brings to the party a great sense of humor, deep humanity, and incomparable energy. Likewise, composer David Della Santa (Volume Music + Sound) was the perfect person to bring our lyrics to life, turning “Day of the Hunter” into more than just a track…it became our anthem on this journey.

In crafting the video, we shied away from “selling” the car itself. Rather, we wanted to convey the spirit of the minivan driver. We also chose to celebrate the sturdiness and usability of the Odyssey as opposed to the sexiness. The Odyssey isn’t sexy, and in our view, it needn’t be. The tricked out Swagger Wagon from Toyota got tons of attention, but in reality the Sienna is not sexy. And honestly, if Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes minivans aren’t sexy, why should Honda crave that distinction?

Perhaps as one reaches “minivan age” sexy becomes relative. Perhaps men grow to relish their role as hunters – and the fact that they get the job done is what’s sexy. The fact that they can choose the right minivan for their family is sexy. And if, in the course of a day off they can drop off the wife and kids, work in a trip to the driving range, make new friends, engage in a paintball fight with a dude in a tutu, and make a trip to the car wash, why not? Spontaneity never goes out of style, and neither should family-manhood.

My wife and I used to say we would never buy a mini-van. Then we had our first child and the ML350 suddenly felt very small, even with just one car seat. So we shopped for SUV's with a third row, still not that much room and very expensive. We really like the Tahoe but brand new the price is just crazy, even a CPO's Q7 was way more than the Ody. One day my wife ran into an old friend who just bought a mini-van (don't remember which one) and this friend turned my wife to the darkside. We talked about it and that we will be trying for our second child very soon and decided why put money into another SUV that will just end up not being great with two young children.

I really enjoy the Ody, cost is much less than an SUV that would not even come close to the amount of space the Ody has. I love the new styling as well and the interior is very nice.

Yeah it's a mini-van and when I roll up to hot chic in a BMW at a light I no longer turn my head. But I am married with children, I no longer need to care about what other chics think. I will get my mid-life crisis car when the kids are older and I lose the rest of my hair...

Haha, awesome video, thanks for sharing. I was in the same boat as probably most of you all here, never thought I'd buy a mini-van, but here I am at 31 with a van, lols. With the release of the 2011, I think it made the transition a little easier to van-dom, and man, do I love the space!

I love the idea of this comercial! Just wish it were on TV so people could see an opposing point of view about the family man.

Yeah, for sure all those hot chics who see you while driving your soccer-mom mobile look back at you and say: "Wow, that guy really looks interesting, I bet he also drives a sports car"

Anyone notice the little people are in the kids car seats?:DD

It would be fun to do a version of family day at the shooting range. Nothing sells a minivan like a middle school girl with a pink rifle.
