New or second-hand?

Hiya all,

Having just moved to Fredericksburg, VA from The Netherlands, I've been looking around for good transportation. After lots of research I now know that the Ody is the van for us, as it is the ideal vehicle to cart us (me, my wife and two kids, plus optional visitors from back home) around discovering our new home, and for hauling in furniture and stuff for our house.

The one thing not resolved, however, is what model to buy! I think we'll do fine with a LX (with maybe a CD player in there), but just about any decent '99 model starts at around $22,000, which is close enough to the sticker value of a new '02 that it makes me wonder if I'd be better of forking out the extra cash for a new car. But we also need to have our own transport pretty fast, we don't want to use rental and borrowed cars for too long.

Any opinions on new vs used? And if I'm to go for new, any tips for finding a good dealer in the Fredericksburg/Central Virginia area that hopefully can get us an Ody without too much waiting time? Anyone willing to sell me a decent '99, '00 or '01 model?

Thanks!

The Honda dealer at Tyson's Corner (just outside the DC Beltway) had around 5 '02s last week. More are on the way too.

I originally wanted to get a used Ody, but couldn't find one. No one wanted to get rid of theirs. After I had mine a week I totally understood why.

Go for the new Ody.

The rare used ones I've been able to find just haven't made sense to me. A local dealer had some '00 EX models with 20k+ miles and was asking over $27k. A brand new one is $27,190!!? I did find a '01 with something like 33k miles and they wanted $26k for it. Still way too much IMO. I dediced to get new.

Thanks everyone, for the replies.

I'd love to get us a new Ody, considering the fact that they changed the brakes and added the side airbags; safety is a big point for me.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to order one yet though, as I still have to iron out some wrinkles with the visa and social security number. The lack of a SSN is likely to trip me up when trying to get financing, even though we can comfortably pay over half in downpayment...
Not having a credit history in the US shucks.
