Hey gang,

Our 2002 Ody EX with 94K miles just recently started behaving like this:

Start car up cold, back out of drive-way, start to accelerate and very soon afterwards (about 3 seconds) we don't get any positive affect of the gas pedal, i.e. the tack drops (rpm goes down, even while still pressing on the gas pedal). So in effect it's like the car is going into neutral but without throttle response because the engine doesn't rev. This happens about 1-2 times in succession w/in about a 10 second period. Start to accelerate, then rpm drop for about 2 seconds, then the rpm picks back up (normal, no rpm surge like it tranny slippage, I think tranny is okay), then about 2-3 seconds later, it happens again and then once speed is picked up 20mph+ it all irons out.

Happens when the engine is hot too, but normally after a good stop, i.e. drive around, stop for gas, then leave and the repeat of above happens. Now it doesn't always happen, just went to the store and back and it was fine.

History:

6 months ago the tranny was rebuilt and an external cooler installed (second gear clutch packs/fibers/solenoids/etc. were shot). shifts a little harder and still now seems to shift firm/fast and sound good (slightly harder shift is good I'm told). Tranny fluid was drained (about 3.5qts last oil change) and 3.5qts (of newly named stuff btw which the honda dealer said can be mixed with the old ZTF honda fluid). BTW, my philosophy going forward is the drain the tranny fluid during every engine oil change, just playing it safe.

about 4 months ago we started noticing very rough idle only when the car is hot and coming off a decent roll to a stop in drive. then moment the car stops at a light etc. it would shudder and idle rough. now, while stopped in drive if I put the car in neutral OR park the rough idle would go away. So I changed the plugs with stock NGK copper plugs, cleaned the EGR passages (they were ~ 50% fouled with carbon, removed and inspected/cleaned IACV (that was really clean), and ran 1/2 a bottle of sea foam via the vacuum booster hose. All this just gave the van a bit more pep but didn't solve the idle issue. this also peaked my interest in gas mileage because it seem like were were buying gas more often...did some calculations and averaging over several fill-ups to find out we average about 16mpg city which is not what I wanted to discover (I feel about 18/19 should be average)

about 2 months ago the timing belt, accessory belts, me and crank seals, tensioner, and water pump were all replaced

about 3 days ago, after reading here about bad gas mileage (btw, I keep 40psi in my tires, clean air breather, and never buy gas with more that 10% ethanol anymore used to from time-to-time about 5 months ago), I decided to change the O2 sensor (only the upstream one from the CAT) with a Bosch original fit (not the splice-type). This seem to remedy the rough idle...REALLY? Yep, so far no more rough idle when the car is hot and stopped. However, just 2 days ago (only one day after putting in that O2 sensor), the no acceleration I explained above started to happen.

Oh and last thing, every since the rough idle and to this very moment, per an Autozone code reader, there hasn't been any CEL or codes thrown.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Roy

O2 sensors can do some strange things. The symptom you are having is similar to what would happen on my SUV, it was the O2 sensor. Seeing it sounds like it happened after replacing with Bosch I would suggest getting the OEM Denso unit. I've read more complaints with Bosch. Does this happen every time you have a cold start like it's reproducible easily? I ask because if you unplug the O2 the van will stay in open loop and run on a predefined air/fuel mixture, this is how I found my truck's upper sensor was bad.

So for starters, assuming you read my little book :) Are you saying that you had the momentary loss of acceleration like I describe or the rough idle? See I've had the rough idle like I describe for a while now and replacing the O2 sensor seems to have corrected that but this momentary loss of acceleration is now present.

Like I said, towards the end of my story, no it doesn't happen all the time, but I would say on a trip from the house to a destination 5 miles away it will happen starting at the house and then starting back fro the destination about 50% of the time right now.

I will unplug this new sensor tomorrow morning and see how it behaves. Also taking note if the rough idle comes back.

Thanks,
Roy

Update:

Unplugged the new upstream Bosch, started van, CEL and TCS lights came on, driving all day and so far no more momentary loss of acceleration with the tack dropping, but the rough idle when hot and stopped at a light in drive is back.

Just bought a Denso from Napa for $81 (wow, couldn't believe the price, same as the Bosch from Autozone). I will install this and follow-up later.

It idled ok but bucked like a bronco. Maybe you have something else making it skip or have dirty injectors?

It doesn't skip...just rough idle ONLY when the car is very hot and comes in off a normal run of 30+ mph to a complete stop in drive only (rough idle). Drop it in neutral or park and the rough idle goes away. Car cold, idle is always smooth. dirty injectors, wouldn't that cause issues the the moment a engine start occurs?

mechanic friend mentioned something about the thermostat possibly not functioning correctly?

replaced the O2 sensor with Denso and all is good, but the rough idle is still present.

Clean your EGR passages, that fixed a hot idle problem with my '02.

I did clean them, said that in my OP.
