I need help diagnosing a noise. I've been searching the forum for weeks but can't find my exact situation. Have also searched YouTube.
I CANNOT replicate the noise, and it appears to ONLY happen when the van is cold and put into drive from park. After the noise begins, if I shift into park the noise goes away. After removing the rear top timing belt cover (the plastic cover), the timing belt tensioner looks and feels solid. The timing belt isn't jumping around while the engine runs, and it's not wobbly looking like what I've seen in the videos on this forum or YouTube. I haven't found anything loose. This did NOT affect any noises. The accessory pulley also feels solid and no bolts were loose when I checked it.
Noise is coming from around area of timing belt tensioner, but it's gone so quickly I can't pinpoint it.
It does NOT sound like the high-pitched TAP-TAP-TAP in the "bad timing belt tensioner" videos.
It's a high-pitched, almost squeak sound combined with what I think is a rattle.
Rattle all the time? No.
Get louder with acceleration? No.
Louder with revs? No. It goes away when in park.
I only hear it maybe 1 minute at the most, and then I'm frantically running around the hood trying to pinpoint it, but by the time I'm ready to jack it up I can't find it again. I can't replicate the noise at all. Van drives just fine.
My theories: the intermediate shaft or the passenger-side CV axle with a bad bearing as it only makes a noise when I shift into drive from park. When I go back to park the noise goes away. Either that or the transmission has something wrong. I've ALWAYS changed the transmission fluid every 25k miles or so with Honda fluid from the dealer.
What does dealership say? They'll diagnose for $99. Service Manager thinks it's the accessory belt tensioner, and that the ones off Rock Auto are crap. When he heard Aisin and Rock Auto for the timing belt tensioner, he suggested that part was probably ok.
I've heard it 3 times in the past 3 weeks, and it's been 1,000 miles since my last timing belt job at 170k miles. 2010 Odyssey LX. Aisin kit off Rock Auto along with new water pump, timing belt tensioner, idler pulley, accessory belt tensioner, etc.
Any help his appreciated. I'm 1-2 days away from just dropping $$$ at the dealer if only for peace of mind.
