I hear a noise from under the hood of my 2000 Ody, just about everytime I roll away under power after starting up. I can't say that it's tied to any steering wheel movement.

The noise lasts about a 1/2 second and sounds like "errrrrt". Like a valve regulating or relieving something?

It makes this sound whether the Ody has been started for the first time for the day or if its been sitting for 30 minutes. I've had it happen when sitting for even less time. The only time it doesn't seem to "errrrrrt" is when it's at the dealership.

Everything works great, power steering, ABS, A/C, no problems at all. Other Ody owners I know have never heard it from their vehicle.

This same sound is made by our 2000 Accord. I worry as the 1998 Accord we had never made the sound.

Any ideas?

I've heard a sound much like that you describe in my 2002 MB EX I picked up three weeks ago. I've only heard it a couple times and think that it was the air diverter plate in the heater tubes opening or closing. I've only heard it after the car had been setting overnight. Once the van is warmed up I haven't heard it. I once had a Volvo that made the same type of sound and that was the culprit.

I have 1999LX 52K, I have same problem. It occurs when vehicle is sitting overnight.
Once warm, it vanishes. I assumes that it is a brake caliper that makes noise when I pull out from my garage in reverse. But I am not sure. Lets see who else have this problem.
Rest all work perfect.

Dennis,

I have experienced exactly the same noise on my '02 with 4,500 miles. Occurs only once after start-up and driving a very short difference. Will occur again with subsequent start-ups, warm, cold or whatever. Did you find out the source of the problem?

Thanks,

Michael

I've heard the same noise every morning, after my Ody's been sitting in the driveway overnight. It sounds like a small electrical/servo motor actuating, and my guess is that it is somehow related to the ABS system. I've noticed that the ABS makes a similar noise when it kicks in.

Since I've been driving mine since Nov'99, and it's been making the same noise every day, I suspect you've got nothing to worry about!

Toaster,

Thank you for the reply. I suspect you are right re. the ABS system and that the noise is benign. That was my 'gut' feeling as well as the noise only occurs after start-up and moving a short distance. Nothing after with driving short or long distances...only after a 'new' start-up.

I have had my share of 'strange' noises with my Ody including the front end 'plastic' rattle over concrete surfaces (?struts), exhaust 'resonator' buzz at low rpm/grade situations (loose baffle?), and sliding door rattles. A very different twist for me currently having 5 Hondas with no noise 'problems'. Honda makes wonderful cars with very few exceptions. Perhaps I am just spoiled and used to the sound of silence. Fun to learn just the same.

Thanks again,

Michael
P.S. my 5 include:
'02 Ody
'02 S2000
'97 NSX
'90 Accord
'88 Legend
