My wife's 2000 LX has about 22,000 miles. On our recent short road trip, I noticed that the OEM Firestone Affinity tires have become very noisy -- you know, the rumbling sound. I have rotated these tires according to the maintenance schedule and both fronts and rears have worn evenly. Have others noticed this? If the noise continues to degrade, I'm going to have to get new tires earlier than my usual 40-50K life. Are there alternatives other than the Firestones (never again) or the Michelin Symmetrys?

We have a 2000LX with 27K miles and the OEM Firestone Affinity tires. Ours have NOT gotten a noiser.

Although they are noiser because we drive faster now (a cop has to have sympathy if I have a screaming two year old when he pulls me over).

We just got back from a the holiday road trip, and as usual the tires on the concrete highways are really noisy.

I would like to replace the tires around 40K or next summer to a nicer tire. I hope to do new rims at the same time -- we will see if our cash flow changes by then.

I follow the following message thread useful:

I bought 225/60/16 Bridgestone Potenza RE910's. Very smooth ride and cool looking tread pattern. One of the best things about these tires I found was the lack of static shocks! I replaced my Firestones at 25,000 miles. I would recommend them!

Costo has a deal on Bridgestone RE900's 225/60/16 for $75 each. That price includes mounting, new valves, lifetime balance/rotate, road hazard. Plus they have a $50 in store coupon till Feb 4. $250 for a new set of Bridgstones - I'm doing it now. Can't wait to get those Firestone's off my 2000 LX!

I've got the Firestones on my '00 LX and they are the noisiest tires I've ever owned. On new concrete they are almost unbearable. I think they could get noisier as they get worn because more of the tire contacts the pavement as it wears down.

My Michelin XGTH4s are very noisy tires, which, when coupled with a pretty noisy chassis, makes for lotsa racket....They do, however, provide very secure handling and will be safe ("A" temperature rating) on summer desert crossings. I'm sure there are quieter performance tires out there, but, one never knows until he has them. Some tires come with a "free ride" period, which would be a good opportunity to try 'em and not buy 'em, if they dissapoint.
