We currently own an Odyssey with over 100k miles on it. Tranny fine so far. I know that Honda has a rough history with its V6 trannies, but I wonder how bad it really is? I noticed that Chrysler products has some trouble with their trannies.

Is there any way to figure out a rough estimate on the percentage of owners who reported problems versus those with limited problems? How long should a automatic transmission realistically last? How do people with problems drive their cars (Do you shift it from park to reverse and quickly touch the gas or do you wait for the tranny to engage before applying gas? Tow? Gun it alot? etc.)

I'm just thinking out loud and wondering what ya'll think.

The bar for me is 100,000 miles. If a tranny goes this far I am satisfied. Of course I want them to go further but 100,000 is a lot compared to riding my schwinn in the day. We have an 05 with 64,000 miles and share some of the symptoms of tranny trouble others on here have and am doubtful that it will make it to 100,000. We are gentle on our van in the way we drive. This reminds me that I need to change the tranny fluid soon.

Drain and fill with Honda ATF often. Add an external ATF filter and ATF cooler if you want. 10 year-old 2001 with 70K miles and no issues. I used to be paranoid - now I am not.

I have 170,000 miles on a 2002 EXL. The tranny functions fine but ocassionally the light behind the "D" on the gear shift indicator will begin blinking. It goes out for weeks after re-starting the motor. Is that a problem indicator?

You can get the code checked. The PCM senses an abnormality when the D light blinks.
