Not happy with Honda build quality - trans, doors, etc.

Hi folks - new to the gang. We just bought a 2018 Odyssey with 40k and there are a few things I’m noticing. taking it to the dealer I wanted to check with the real experts.

1) Transmission. I did some searching and it seems the low-gear lurch/loss of power/delayed shifting may be a design flaw. I experience it and it’s super annoying. Like I have to feather the throttle until I’m in the right gear. Question-if I take it to Honda, will they do anything? Are there actual issues? They mentioned doing a diagnostic but couldn’t really explain what that entailed. The powertrain is under warranty for another month or so

2) Is there an easy way to adjust the sliding doors? The passenger side door card (interior) rubs the rear quarter panel and has gone through the paint. I bought it this way but just realized that was the cause. My driver side slider also has some wind noise. So one side is tight the other is loose.

3) Driver side window. When we open it it hesitate/shakes almost as if it’s loose.

Overall, it’s only been a couple of months but I’m really disappointed with Hondas build quality. There are a few other issues that I’ll post about too.

Yes the door can be adjusted. Use 1 day subscription to Honda tech site to see the service manual. There are three spots to make adjustments and You will need a tool like this to adjust the rear of the door.

The sliding door issue is well known, people have had their paint rubbed down to bare metal. I believe it's because of the seal, not the door card.

What trim level do you have (Touring models have the 10 speed while lower models have the 9 speed)? The 9 speed has actually shown to have fewer outright failures than the 10 speed, mostly just shift quality complaints.

The sliding door obviously needs adjusting, but also the paint needs to be reapplied.

Have both done under your warranty.

The Ody you bought in the GEN 5 series 2018 had the borrowed 9-speed transmission with known problems. It was probably traded in for this reason. The Dealer, how ever cannot repair it, it is beyond their resources to do it, and if the ODY is not giving a code problem for the trans mission, the Dealer will say we cannot fix this with no problem showing in a code. A lot of people have this problem., and are frustrated with Honda. The diagnostic which you will be charged for will give no information, be assured if you have not received any codes, the diagnostic will do nothing for you. This was the bad thing about the 9-speed, however the 10-speed did not have the same type of problems and in the 2021 to current ODY models have the 10-speed, which tells you Honda knows they should have never used this transmission. There is a lot of these ODY's out, the Touring and Elite was the only 2 that did not have the 9-speed instead have the 10-speed, there are some people have been fortunate to not have problems with it or like you just lived with the problems. It's a really hefty price to pay for Honda's mistake but a lot of people have fought about this with Honda, and fell on deaf ears. I do not appreciate the the used sales did not inform you of the two problems (transmission and sliding doors). Does your State have any type of law about disclosing about problems of used vehicles? They are really shameful if they have not. Wished you would have come to this Forum to ask about this before you purchased, a lot of members here would let you know about what to look for in purchasing a ODY. Good luck if you decide to pursue any type of work done.

Unless they have the extended, this vehicle is well out of the standard warranty.

If they just bought it (used from dealer) it should be covered for some period after purchase.
It’s due for a transmission oil change.
It is funny that you bought a used vehicle with 40K miles and you are complaining about build quality. Maybe you should find the previous owner and write a letter of how disappointed you are.

Since this is used, As suggested, do an ATF change and if there are any pending TSBs or recalls that have not been performed, do it while there.
