Hi,

Im buying a used Honda ODYSSEY Touring 2008 here in winnipeg
the dealer said the following

1. The van is from the US
2. It has 40,000 miles
3. 7 seater ( 2 captain seats in the middle )
4. Pax Tire
5. price is 27,000 Plus tax

Problem
1. but im having problem searching if there is a Touring 2008 7 seater...
im only seeing that has the 7 seater is 2007 Touring and not the 2008 Touring. is there really a 7 seater for 2008 model?
2. Since it has 40,000 miles. is it possible that it still has warranty in the US?

Wanted to know also. do you guys happen to know the Speaker Brand thats being used on 2008 Touring?

If it is indeed 2007 and they just made it look like 2008 ( not sure if its possible though. i am not going to take it.

I hope someone could help me with this before i decide getting this 2008 touring.

Do a VIN search ie. Carfax. Do you have an AMA membership? They can do a VIN search for you - well worth it.

You can easily check the model year by looking at the VIN, visible through the driver's side of the windshield on the dash. The 10th digit is the year.

PAX is a huge problem. No service available in Canada. Expensive to de-PAX.

Honda will apparently not warrantee a US model in Canada.

I looked at the US models belore I bought my '05 Touring, and ended up with a Canadian model to avoid some of the potential problems.

Caveat_Emptor, how much is the dealer asking ?

Like DLD said, a PAX'ed Odyssey in Canada can be a lot of hassles, or make that ha$$le$. Canadian Honda dealers (and prolly most if not all tire shops) are not equipped nor trained to deal with Honda PAX tires/wheels. Unless you plan on swapping them out with non-PAX wheels and tires once you bring it home (you'll have problem of re-selling PAX tires/wheels here) and that extra cost is worth it to you.

Is this a Honda dealer you're dealing with or an indie ?

Hi its not a honda dealer
its another brand dealer ( manufacturer )

asking price for 2008 honda touring 7 seater is $29,000
at first
then i haggled and they lowered it to $27,000

they will install a new 2 way remote starter
they will give me 2 year power train warranty ( from the dealer / seller )

so i would have to ask them not to put in pax tires? and tell them that i will have problem with the tire if it is installed? is that right?

by the way. how would i know if its really a pax tire?
will it say on the tire itself?

To answer your original question the 2008 is an 8 seater. If the van you are bidding on is a 2008 the removable jump seat is missing. If you look on the ceiling the van should still have the seatbelt for the middle row middle seat.

If the van has 10 spoke rims it has PAX tires. If it has 5 spoke rims it is non-PAX. If it does have PAX it is more than just changing the tires. You'll need new RIMS. PAX tires are pretty rare on the 2008+ vans. If it is a 2007 it probably does have PAX.

The Honda warranty runs out at 3 years 36k miles so you'll need the extended warranty from the seller. Make sure the warranty is from a decent company. I know someone who had a warranty and right after they bought the car the company went bankrupt and they no longer had any warranty and did not get their money back.

This is the PAX rim UmmGooD refers to:

And a non-PAX rim:

You might be able to get the 8th-seat cushion (if it is in fact missing) from a dealer or wrecker, but no guarantees. Having said that, ask yourself if you MUST have the 8th seat at all. Check to see the ceiling has the shoulder belt for the 2nd-row center (8th) seat.

FWIW, when we bought our EX-L, we were also open to having the Touring as long as it was an '08 or newer which has the 8th seat and ceiling-mounted shoulder belt. That way if we ever need to, we can have an 8th person (but reality suggests that will be 5% of the time). At the moment I store the 8th seat bum cushion in the trunk so that center console cubby is "open" which makes it easy for my son to reach in for wipes, sippy cup or his toys/books while in transit.

That picture is definitely a 2008 (it has the revised front grill), BUT it is not the Touring... Those are the EX and EX-L wheels.... definitely not PAX and also, it has no foglights (another indication it's NOT a Touring).
Megatron is right. That is not a touring. It doesn't have fog lamps. It also doesn't have the sensors for the proximity detection.

This is our van it is a 2008 touring you can see the difference. Ours doesn't have PAX. But you see the fog lights and the proximity sensors.

Also there is another PAX wheel that wasn't displayed here. I think the pax wheel posted by Saab Ken is for <= 2007. I think the PAX wheel was changed in 2008. I remember seeing it on a burgandy van someone posted but I can't find the picture. It still has 10 spokes though.

it has 5 spoke rim... so im guessing its a 100% guaranteed that it doesnt have a pax tire right?

can we differentiate if this is 2008 or 2009? or we need to check the vin for us to know as the 2008 and 2009 doesnt have any difference in the exterior?

Interior looks a little rough/dirty/worn. maybe someone has been in the center console? (big gap in the plastic)

Other thing to check is if you can insure the car in Canada being its of US origin.

When bringing a car from Canada to US, I couldn't insure it due to it failing DOT safety standards and a couple of other things.... Mind you that was for an older model Pontiac Bonneville, but double check that part as well.

are you referring to Car insurance? or manufacturer warranty? sorry im new to this...

the car is already safetied. thats the only thing that the insurance company (autopac) need here in winnipeg.

for the manufacturer warranty. im already aware that it doesnt have any warranty from honda since its from US..... but it has 24 months power train warranty. which i think i will never gonna use. and secondly i was informed that i can also avail of a 3rd party extended warranty for the van.....

by the way, the dealer said that they will detail the van... i think they will just clean it and not really detail the van

Car insurance.

Detailing is basically a wash, dry and wax by the local shop monkeys. A "detail" by a real detailer is more than the dealership will be willing to pay (think 300-1000 USD)

Third party warranty is rarely worth the additional $$. I'd rather save the money in MY bank account and pay a trusted mechanic to fix any issues.

By the way if you do have a trusted mechanic (not the dealer mechanics), take the car there and have them inspect it if you are truly serious about the car. Externally it looks good... As a point of comparison, I bought an 07 EX with 40k miles for 17K USD. This one has the 8th seat, full Honda Tow Package, brand new tires, battery, wipers etc.

wow nice price.... well i dont know yet when the battery and wiper has been replaced and if they will replace the tire with a new one.

last time i saw the tire. its about 50% im guessing

i guess i will bring a mechanic when i get the van....

but it is definite that the van doesnt have pax tire / pax rim right?

Looking online it seems that PAX tires have some unfamiliar sizing system stamped on them.

You will see something like: 235-710R460A on a PAX tire. If it is the standard 235r17/55 (I use just a sample sizing, not the true size of a non-PAX tire for a odyssey), then its almost certainly a non-pax tire.

if you do get a PAX car, argue the dealer down $2000 USD (thats the cost for you to replace with new non-PAX tires and rims, and an additional $300 for the 8th seat.)
Then, you'd be in a better price range for that year car with the mileage and issues with it :)

Good luck.
