I saw it mentioned that Honda meant 5w30 for 2001 models, but what about 2002?
Our manual says 5w20.
Thanks,
Eric

I don't have the answer for the 2002's. The 2001 question was answered with this letter to Chuck.

Honda's response

I see you're from The Woodlands. I'm on the NW side in Copperfield. If you ever need any help with anything, let me know.

Eric,

Take a look at your oil fill cap. I'll bet you it says "5W20."

The 2001's (at least the early ones like mine) had 5W20 in the manual, and 5W30 on the oil fill cap. This confusion no led to some investigative work by some resourceful individuals.

The letter referenced in the above post shows that the 2001's do indeed use 5W30.

I believe the 2002's are correctly labeled.

There is another thread about this somewhere, but both Honda & Ford are recommending 5W-20 for 2002 to get a little better mileage. I would worry about this in high temperature areas but you hope they know what they are doing.........

I have just received the Helm Service Manual for the 1999- 2002 Odyssey. On page 3-2 it shows the API Cerification labels For 1999 to 2001 it says SAE 5W-30. For 2002 it says 5W-20.

There is also a table of reccommended motor oil. 1999 - 2001 shows 5W-30 preferred with 10W-20 shown as an option above 20 F.

2002 shows 5W-20 as the only choice for all temperature ranges.

It looks to me as if they are serious this year about the 5W-20.

When I had the gall to ask Honda about the 5w20, I got bawled out in a rather nasty manner at Honda cust svce.

Our salesman said that the manual stated 5w 20 but given the temperatures in Texas(San Antonio) that 10w 30 would be fine. He also stated that the most important thing was to keep the oil changed every 3000-4000 miles.

Ask the salesman what his last job was, and what prepared him to make the above advice.

Salesmen sell. Yesterday toilets, today cars, tomorrow pharmaceuticals. They sell. It doesn't matter what.

Don't take the salesman's word for it. Ask someone who knows.
