This morning, noticed a large sheet of paint came off of the left side of the hatch. What causes such? Bad paint job by Honda?

History: Bought this 2014 Touring in Spetember 2013, then in early 2014, we had hail damages which was repaired but paint job was not needed. Then at mid 2014, a young driver ran into me on the driver side at low speed, which was also repaired by authorized Honda dealer. I believe they replaced the driver side door(s). Did they had to repaint the entire vehicle?

What caused it? White paint on a narrow strip. Commonly (at least I've seen) you see it peeling in front of the sunroof, off the D pillar, and the upper hatch piece (as you have)... at least that's where I see it most often (on the road) with Hondas. Different manufacturers have different specifics...

How do you avoid it? Don't buy a white car. This happens to a variety of manufacturers, so, not just a 'Honda' thing. Some blame it on EPA restrictions on the chemical manufacturers are allowed to use in recent years. me? IDK, but it certainly sounds plausible.

Sorry :(

Oh, and, likely no, they likely did not repaint the entire car. They wouldn't have if the replacement door matched closely enough (which it likely would have - esp in 2014)

Unfortunately this now just becoming a much bigger "Honda" problem for their vehicles painted White in their USA plants...

Mostly in Alabama.. The common Paint DELAMINATION is spreading across the USA & Canada where the majority of where these are Sold..

This is no longer an unfortunate coincidence amongst white Honda owners..

There is a severe problem..!!

Our piece on the Tailgate just came off this past weekend, the Sunroof started last month. :(

Have you shared pictures of the tailgate yet?

Which SoCal dealer assisted with your process? There aren't too many District Managers for corporate that approve the work to be covered.. PM me if you don't want to post dealer here.

Also I joined a FaceBook page called "Honda Paint Defect Action Group"

The majority White Paint Delamination failures are being posted by Pilot, Odyssey, Fit & Ridgeline owners..
All newer models like ours..!!

That paint peel on the hatch has been repaired. After few trips to local Honda dealer, they repainted it and charged me less than $100.

But now, discovered last week, the paint is peeling off on front top. A week later since I visited local Honda dealer, they agreed to repair it as well. They haven't told me how much it will be, yet. I hope this isn't going to become a routine every four months...

Hi,

I just saw your post and wanted to see if Honda ever made these repairs for you. I also have a 2014 Odyssey with white pearl paint peeling off. Honda refuse to pay. I've been quoted $1100 and have had 4 body shops state it's defective paint. My email is pcsclean@bellsouth.net if you want to reply. Thanks

I have a 2012 Touring celestial blue metallic (CBM). It is spot peeling in the exact same spot as itchibahn's above picture of white on a medium gray primer. Why the heck do you put medium gray under white color coat? Mine is CBM on a white primer or very very light gray. The color code B564M for CBM says it requires a medium gray primer, and I do not think that is correct. My bumper was repainted and it was black plastic that I can see, so its top color coat ends up darker than the rest of the car. I bought this 2012 used. I just touched up my spot above the windshield using recommended medium gray primer, and its CBM with plenty of clear coat 2000 grit wetsand paper polished buffed is also darker than the factory on the rest of the car. I think Alabama factory is messed up in their paint department. For my other touch ups needed on the rear hatch (couple small inch spots on the horizontal under the window) I will use and by the lightest primer to match the mistake by the factory to keep it consistent. Who knows how many Ody's have the wrong primer color painted by yes Alabama. The primer color does affect the darkness or lightness of the top color coat. I joined "FaceBook page called "Honda Paint Defect Action Group". Feels better that we all suffer together and not alone. Paint is ultra thin also. I'll have to see about getting it measured. Should be 20 microns/micrometers or .79 mils per Honda specs. Its frustrating painting a car per spec and it ends up the spec is incorrect. Our 2006 Volvo XC70 paint looks thick and tough like a ceramic stove top. I have four hondas and a volvo in the family.
