It's finally over!!! After over 6 months of fighting American Honda, we have finally reached a settlement with them over our paint problems!! However, it did take me going through a third party (BBB Autoline) in order to get anyone at Honda to take me seriously.

I had previously been given an offer of about $300 in accessories from the DSM over our area. When I tried to negotiate with him, he withdrew the offer and refused to speak with me about my problems. He said that I would need to proceed through the BBB.

Well, it appears that Honda's pretty responsive once you file a BBB complaint!! I was put in touch quite quickly with a mediation specialist from American Honda. After some negotiations, we settled on receiving a 7/100,000/0 Honda Care Comprehensive warranty and the i-VES installed in our Ody.

I'm just glad that Honda was able to agree on a reasonable settlement in lieu of painting my van or proceeding to arbitration. I had spent quite a bit of time corresponding and speaking to different people at Honda, as well as taking my van in for inspections at the dealer. It was all getting quite old!!

Needless to say, if anyone is dissatisfied with Honda's response at the service manager / DSM level, by all means contact the BBB Autoline. It's completely free, and it didn't take too much time. Just a quick phone call and then some paperwork to fill out. After that, I spoke directly with American Honda mediation to negotiate the settlement, and we notified the BBB when we had reached one. The BBB then typed up a settlement agreement and sent to both of us. Only a couple of weeks later, my van is at the dealer today getting the i-VES installed, and I should be receiving my warranty paperwork shortly!

Wow sounds sweet. I assume your problem was with the Silver. Let me get this straight though, you complained about the paint and they gave you the 7/100/0 warranty and IVES in lieu of repainting the Ody? I am confused as to how giving you the warranty and IVES fixes the paint problem. Or is it a payment of a sorts for a flawed paint?

Yes. I do have the silver ODY. The settlement was in lieu of painting the vehicle. They had originally offered to paint it, but because of the problems that can occur when breaking a factory paint seal and the possibility of the new paint not matching the original, I chose to just live with the problem and get the compensation!

The swirls are not seen at every angle, and can't be seen in direct sunlight. I'm sure most people looking at my van wouldn't notice until I pointed it out. It just bugs me that Honda has such poor quality control during their paint process.

That sounds like a pretty good compensation. I understand that getting a bad paint job is not good. But if they had painted portions of your van (or the whole van itself) then that would have reduced the value of the van I think. So getting these options is better that getting the thing re-painted.

Maybe if I peed and moaned enough about my rattling brake calipers, they would throw in a leather interior and CD changer, Hee! Hee! The squeaky wheel does indeed get greased.....

Personally, I'd like them to tackle the fuel gauging issues.

I just received my Canadian Ody and have the paint problems with the SS. I have contacted Honda Canada (notified them after 131 km on the van) after my DSM said it was beyond his ability to do anything besides repaint it in his body shop. We also have a Motor Vehicle arbitration council in Canada to help mediate with manufacturers. I hope it doesn't come to that!

Good luck in dealing with Honda Canada. Maybe they're a little easier to work with than American Honda. As I stated before, they were very unwilling to do anything before I contacted the Better Business Bureau Autoline. Once the third party was involved, though, their mediation group was not bad to work with.
