I would have a compression test done. The rings may be severely stuck due to the inferior spark plugs installed in 2021. (I presume you disabled VCM at the same time?)

Replace the remaining 3 spark plugs too. It's easier to plan future service when they all have the same history. Also, the existing ones are likely inferior to factory spec. Lastly, misfire codes can point to the wrong cylinders; following them in isolation can lead to missing the truly misfiring cylinder.

"The bottom line is that you do not need to pay for an expensive piston ring replacement job and there's not much VCM damage that can't be undone. It is actually recommended to avoid the piston ring replacement job "

THANK YOU!!! I had a 2005 Ody that I sold after having a VCM muzzler on it and for some reason thought I'd be fine with my 2015 Odyssey. NOPE. VCM has been chugging and now I'm burning oil. Your write up was balm to my soul, haha. I am all over this VCM muzzler again...buying today! Just got off the call w/dealer quoting $3k+ for the new rings. Looks like I can tell him to pound sand and just get new plugs and a VCM muzzler. Hope the damage is eventually undone as you say.

Hey, at least you took the time to actually read it instead of the others who just gloss over it and miss that.

Hi Dave,

Please see my past posts, compression test was done though I don't trust the Honda dealship because, when I picked it up, spark plus 1-4 were not tight, ignition coils were not tightened down, vacuum clamps for brakes booster and front/right vacuum line were not put back in place, intake air hose clamp was not re-installed, rear/driver side sensors off engine block (not sure what they are) were not re-installed w/two nuts missing to secure them, plastic engine cover just sitting on top but not secured. So please see my posts # 482, 491-494, 506, 518, and 520 (likely trhe one you read). Has always been worse on cold start after it rained. Rain overnight yesterday. Found if I kept foot on gas to keep RPMs around 2000 that it only throws codes when I lift foot off gas when it goes back to 750-800 RPM idle. Curious? I'm running Seafoam at 2 ounces/gallon and hitting the accelerator hard as often as possible. It has plenty of power.

Hard to find a good stealership.
That's why most here specifically recommend, NOT going to Stealership.

Have you checked your accordion air intake hose for cracks?
Remove it, and look for cracks all around in the grooves.
Just a thought, an easy check, that often gets overlooked.

Good luck

Hi @maxud and @verbatim, please send pricing and availability for your muzzler device for 2016 Odyssey.
Thank you, Bob
For @verbatim, post in this thread;

For @maxud, You posted in the right place.

BTW, . . . Welcome to the OdyClub.

Sorry, yes I remember now. This was the dealership that said you need a new engine LOL.

Their compression test result FWIW was:
PERFORMED COMPRESSION TEST FOUND CYL 2-3 COMPRESSION 150-160 AND THE COMPRESSION ON CYL 4 -6 210PSI
The high-low variation is 50-60 PSI. Honda says here the maximum variation should be 29 PSI.

Do you know of an independent Honda specialist in your area?

Unfortunately no. The VCM was installed months after the plugs and coils. Agree, the misfires can point to the wrong cylinders...when CEL originally came and reported misfires in Cyls 1-3, I replaced plugs in 4-6 (the easy ones) and started engine to make sure all was OK, CEL went off. I then replaced plugs in Cyls 1-3.

Will install new plugs in cyls 4-6 and continue driving it hard w/Seafoam for a while to see if it loosens the rings. As noted it has a lot of power even my wife noticed it.

If that doesn't do it I would consider the lesser engine soak you described. Would pouring seafoam through the MAP sensor port while not running and then turning the engine over be viable? If not, how do is the Seafoma injected with engine running? How much seafoam do you recommend for the lesser soak?

No - risk of hydrolocking the engine.

Better to pour it into individual cylinders through the spark plug holes. Always change the oil after.
how do is the Seafoma injected with engine running?
Usually straight into the throttle body with the air tube removed. Not sure how this will work with the electronic throttle that yours has.
How much seafoam do you recommend for the lesser soak?
The flow rate is more important than the volume. Feed it as fast as possible without stalling the engine. Stop the engine as promptly as possible after 1/2 can. Let it sit for several hours. The longer the better.

Also, a simple oil change (especially if the MM is below 50%) can help free the rings by unleashing a fresh load of detergents.

Good plan - slow and steady usually wins this race.

Everyone likes pictures. And there were a couple parts of the thread that were bugging me because they looked too "textwally". So I added a few more photos to help people.

FWIW:
1. If the VCM Tuner II is "backordered" until the next Monday morning at 9:00 AM Pacific time, try ordering it at 8:55 AM Pacific time on that next Monday morning. That worked for me! (It was sold out by 9:30 AM.)
2. I am a 76-year-old woman with no car maintenance expertise. If I can install the VCM Tuner II on my 2015 EX-L, you can too! I did need to purchase a 10mm wrench at my local hardware store, to loosen and tighten the nut on the battery terminal.

I don't have the "aggressive driver" gene in me, so after a documented blinking CEL (under warranty) that was, in hindsight, not properly diagnosed nor addressed, followed by a "repeat" of the blinking CEL 6 months later (post-warranty) with a P0301 code diagnosed by an independent Honda mechanic, I made a "deal" with the dealer, who had regularly and exclusively maintained my 2015 EX-L, to do the ring job for $1100, instead of the typical $3500. That was my own "informed" decision! YMMV. I then ordered and installed the VCM Tuner II, since my EX-L is registered in California.

This whole post has been just so enlightening! Thanks to all who have contributed, especially "WiiMaster", to share such detailed knowledge of this pervasive VCM problem, along with the simple $100 bypass, which itself is pure genius (just "fib" about the engine temperature, to prevent VCM from ever engaging)! It was a Google search on keywords "Odyssey P0301" that originally led me to this fabulous forum post.

Sorry to hear you ended up paying for an unnecessary ring job, but glad to hear you got it fixed.

Welcome to the OdyClub.

Great work installing a Muzzler.

Consider adding some fuel cleaner too, then driving hard and fast when able.

Figured I would share.... 2012 EX-L 128400 Miles, got a misfire on #1. I've known about Muzzlers for quite a few years now but for what ever reason I get distracted and don't install one.... Until now, I ordered a SVCM last week and swapped out plugs today, hopefully the SVCM will be here in a couple days. Looking at the pictures I realized wrote the wrong cylinder numbers on the plugs, correct orientation: 1-2-3
4-5-6

How many miles on those plugs?

They look spooky. :p

Van will be thrilled, if replace all six plugs.

Please report back results.
Im actually not sure on the milage of the plugs, we had the timing belt and 100K service done @ 95K at the dealership so who knows if they changed out the plugs..... so either around 30K or 128K:unsure:
