My 2000 ex with 130k miles has developed a problem with the power steering. Within the first 5 minutes of driving the boost cuts out leaving me to muscle the wheel. The power comes back and could not be repeated for a mechanic I had inspect it. It happens within the short stop and go of leaving a small neighborhood. There is no apparent mechanical failure. Could there be an electronic cause? I would appreciate any insights.

Sounds like a slipping PS pump belt...but you'd get a terrific squealing noise to go with it.

The pump might be cavitating from an air leak on the suction side of the pump, but you'll get an unmistakable noise from that, too.

Dunno. Any suggestions from the gallery?

Rack seals failing once the oil gets heated up? Main pressure relief in the pump failing in a way that limits maximum pressure? All guesses at this point.

To the OP: monitor the problem and see if it is always happens at the same time, or does it happen sooner or later with temperature changes.
