I would suspect you keep your foot off the brake pedal, hit the start button either once or twice and then you should be able to use the accessories.

I would just be safe and shut it down completely in park, then press start once without brake to run DVD. I am not brave enough to shut down the car in any gear other than park or neutral.

So we have to have the transmission in N or D for the radio and accessories to remain on? The Americans are always ahead on electrical convenience. All Chrysler/Jeep/GM and other American vehicles leave all accessories on when you shirt into Park and press the engine stop button.

You're right, this is important because we make tons of stops and the kids and me are in the car waiting.

I hope the Odyssey's starter is up to the task of constant starting!

It's not exactly a case of consistent starting. I assume most of us use the Ody as the official family vehicle, and would often consolidate all the trips. So yes, there could be several stops in one trip. Often, if one need to run into a store for example, it's quicker to just have one person run in and out. Rather than unloading the entire family and reloaded everyone back, buckled, etc.

If it's 2 mins or more, I'm not running the engine (for nothing).

Leave trans in gear while shutting down will leave accessories power on.
Interesting... will have to try to this out the next time we're waiting in the van and playing the dvd. I usually shut down normally and press the button twice to get the accessories to turn on. By then, the kiddos in the back are saying "Ahhh, dad... why'd you have to turn off the tv???". Then, there's the wait for everything to cycle back up and start playing again. Thanks!

So tired it. It works. Drop it to N. Press the button. Engine goes off. Accessories stay on.

I will add one more step (yet to try). Shift back to P.

It works. I put it in park and I all remained on. Best tip I learned on here yet.

Every morning at the bus stop I would shut down and put Accessories mode on. Now I can go straight to Accessories and not have to reboot. COOL. Thanks for the tip.

Now what about the re-start? Can we avoid a reboot there?

this is one of the things i think toyota got right. in the wifey's highlander, you just double tap the start button and all accessories stay on. not a huge deal to leave in neutral, but im surprised honda didnt think ahead.

What‘s nuts, is that this procedure fails on my 2017 Accord. However, the secret is to take one more step, as follows.

If you do the above, as others have said, the radio stays on, yes. BUT the moment you out it in Park, the radio shuts off!

Here‘s how you get around this (I‘ll bet no manual tells you this):
1: leave gear in neutral (or Drive, with the handbrake set)
2: turn off engine
3: press the Start button once
4: put it in Park

I find the easiest way is to just shift in P like you do usually. At this point, if you press the side button on the gear selector (the safety button you have to press to get it out of P) and hold it while turning off the engine, all the accessories remain on.

Yes, that works (for the Odyssey), pressing the side button once it’s in Park. But that involves using both hands! Although maybe it already ends up in the accessories mode (the same as turning off in gear, and then going to Park?). I want my keyed ignition switch back!!!

For my 2017 Accord, as I described above, there is no side button, so what I said there still stands (as being the minimal procedure for shutting off that Accord without losing the radio). What is puzzling, is that the procedure would be so different, with a vehicle from the same manufacturer and the same model era!

Speaking of the lack of uniformity, our 2016 Odysseys have the volume control at the outside extremity of the steering wheel, right? So the channel control is inboard of this. On my 2009 Civic EX, however, it had the same controls, but reversed! The Channel button was farther out than the volume button!

The one thing that I found superior, though, on the 2009 Civic, was that the ignition switch used a key, like we’ve been using (very happily!) for decades.
