I have a 2006 honda odyssey ex l, it needs a new engine. I got a 2003 ex l engine to go in it. I want to know if I can keep the transmission that was on the j35a7 and just hook the j35a4 engine up to it. I couldn't really find anything about if you can interchange those 2 years transmissions.

Anything's possible with enough time and money, but I doubt you could even get the engine to work, considering the significant differences, let alone the transmission.

What's wrong with the existing engine? I smell the XY problem here...

Given there are two different engines, with completely different transmissions .........

I would say probably not compatible. Being a J35 series does not guarantee universal fitment for blocks and bellhousings. Hey, I commend the desire to make use of what you have but you're downgrading here if you put that engine in the 2006. Not to mention the wiring, hoses, mounting, subframe, etc. all needs to be considered.

Even just a simple difference: the 2003 engine has a cable throttle, the 06 is drive by wire. One of many differences that would have to be accounted for somehow. Like I said, anything's possible with enough money. But you probably don't want to go down that road.
