Behind the rear bumper cover is the solid plastic piece that is the actual bumper. When my Ody was first rear-ended a few years ago at about 15 MPH, there was no external cosmetic damage, but upon removal of the bumper cover, the bumper itself was cracked slightly. That piece is also mounted to solid metal of the frame I believe, and the impact may have damaged both.
