Hello everyone,

My tow hitch just dropped a little, and once under there to assess, I realized I have a MUCH bigger problem - the rear of the box section frame members are rusted right through.

I am wondering if anyone has had a quote for this repair? What concerns me is how anyone with welding ability would gain access? I have a feeling that most people would say that it's just too difficult to do.

The van is doing well otherwise - just replaced the transmission, and the engine is awesome - still running smooth and quiet at 220K, no oil consumption or leaking. Losing the ability to tow is not the end of the world, but of course it comes in handy occasionally (I only haul light loads).

The 2 photos are shot from underneath, pointing from the mid-section of the chassis and looking towards the rear end. I wince when I see the degree of rust! (I'm guessing it's bad because the rear tires would have been sending all sorts of water and debris up onto these surfaces.

I would look over the rest of the car for rust. Rust repair like that is expensive. Because it involves alot of labor. If that were my car I'd be shopping for a replacement. Find an Ody from the southwest or CA that needs an engine and/or trans (from your rusty car).
This is why I use Fluid Film and/or LPS3 rust preventive oils on all my cars. If you were to look under my Ody, it would be covered with fluid film inside and out of each section.
You can repair mechanical and electrical problems but the rust is another story....

The area that is rusted is a structural part of the car. It's not just there to hold a trailer hitch. During a rear end accident the back seat passengers are at a greater risk of injury because the structure is now severely compromised. It's up to the owners/drivers of the car to determine if they want to accept this risk not only for themselves but those that are sitting in the rear seats which may include children. If this car is someone's "work truck" then then the risk is minimal.
The structure of a car is carefully designed and crash tested to protect the occupants during an accident.

The rest of the car needs to be inspected for rust problems. I suspect this is not the only area that is rusted. Rust repair is labor intensive and the quality of the work is determined by the knowledge and skills of the shop doing the work.
