let me try to be more clear. I am in drivers seat, looking back through rearview and can't see anything from the back down to the ground. Is there a mirror that I can put inside the car that will give that visibility? I feel like I could hit something behind me, God forbid a small child.

I see a mod here, for the NAVI owners....one of those small rearview cameras that kicks in and turns on the NAVI screen whenever the gearshift goes into reverse....of course, it would override the TV system, right?

Check with Steve (VideoNAVI). I believe he's done a similar setup using an old quickcam from his PC. I can't remember the specifics but I do believe it was actually going to mount inside the rear window pointing down and would do what you're asking.

...or spend the $45K on a new Q45.

Sorry (that link does not work) check the gallery for nemogira.

and click on Window Lens. It provides a wide angle view of the rear.

The CRV has a Mirror available that attached on the exterior, just about the rear window and hangs down at a 45 degree angle.

It shows you what is immediately behind your bumbper.

I have the same exact "mirror" as Nestor has and it works pretty good. Got it through an RV/Camping store for I beleive $8.
But here's one I'm trying to get:

Original JDM mirror.

It's actually a "lense" rather than a mirror. Here's a better pic of how YOU would actually see it. Now note that my 3rd seat headrests are removed and things such as this (people, cargo, or even at nighttime) would make this lense less effective. That's probably when you would want to go with electronic back up sensors.

But for the most part it does the job and can't beat the price & the installtion time!

That lens is great for distance however it would not have helped me with the wall i hit yesterdy. I have been debateding on getting poron system. With the damage I did yesterday it would have paid fo itself!

Not sure exactly what you mean by "great for distance", but I agree that these units are not suited for judging distance while backing up so you don't hit anything. The image gets too distorted as you get closer.
They let you notice that something is in your path so you can avoid it, not how close you can get to it safely.

However, they work great for what I needed, which was to make sure when backing up I won't run over the dog, my kids' bikes, or other children in the preschool parking lot. For these situations and given my experience with the wide-angle lens the past few months, I prefer this over the electronic units. Especially in the wallet and the fact that installation is simple and it will never need repairing.

For anyone making this decision, it depends on your "backing up needs", i.e., what are you trying to avoid? Parallel parking or backing up to walls, other cars, etc., then I would prefer the sensor unit option. Those don't concern me much. You might be different.

As a point of reference for the lens, when stopped at a light and some car pulls up behind you so that looking over your shoulder thru the rear window you can see no lower than their wipers, the wide-angle lens will show you the complete front of their car and a bit of the pavement in front of it.

Ther is another exit on the opposite end of the complex. I had to back up down a narrow driveway to get out. about 2/3 down the driveway there is a little river rock wall that juts out. The wall is about two feet high. I was completely unable to see the wall from either mirror. Only my wife from here vantage point said I was going to hit something. Too late I scratched the rear bumber pretty bad around the area above the muffler. The muffler put a hole in the wall and came out unscathed. O well a little paint and she will be good as new.
