I would remove the little metal base and clean it good along with where you want to stick it on the windshield, then get some glue sold specific for that purpose. I’m sure most auto stores have it. Stick just the metal base on and keep pressure on it, maybe even tape it. Let it setup for about 30 minutes or so, then slip your mirror on it and tighten it down. I don’t remember if these mirror metal bases have a set screw or just slide out.

At least that’s how I do it.

Yeah, this is what I did with Permatex. Took metal base off, sandpapered it. Scraped the contact glass contact area with razor. Cleaned everything with 99% alcohol. Pressed for 30 seconds , left overnight.... This was about 3 weeks ago.

Hunh, was that glue specific for glass? Sounds like you did everything needed to make it stick proper.

Does the base have a spring or set screw, it’s been a while....might check with some glass install folks, see what they use.

I know awhile back when I removed one from my 06 parts van, it actually chinked out the inner glass where the base was. That thing was on there.

I need to add a Gentex to my old Maxima and the glass does not have the button to mount it. I was already looking into how to do so. Now, after seeing this, I may just hit up a glass shop. Why did the button come off to begin with?

I had found this a couple days back.
Best Rear View Mirror Glues: Adhesives With Top Sticking Power Permatex does not have that great reviews so it seems at the Advance Auto stores. Amazon reviews seem good.

"why did the button come off?". One day I got in the car and it was just there , suspended by the cable. Held up for 7 years I guess. I never touched it. The Permatex failed as you can see, and I am confident I followed the instructions. I will try glass store. Warranty? What warranty! No warranty.

Wow, this is weird. Called the dealer, they say - go to auto glass shop. Talked to one, they tell me they need to order the whole mirror assembly cuz, you know, the metal button is integral to the whole assembly and comes from manufacturer with a dab of the "right" adhesive applied. The dude even tried to make friends with me by teaching me how I can make it more economical by buying a kit from Autozone. Full(or fool's) circle! Apparently some shops are just in business of scamming insurance and if you just pop up with out of pocket expenses they are a bit embarrassed to admit to it. Called another one, who had high rating. A Hispanic guy who works from his garage..... He applied a dab of mystery substance for $15 right there in his driveway. Let's see how it goes.

If you ask me, Honda's idea to glue heavy rear view mirror to windshield is hot garbage.

Time to visit the same Hispanic guy. Tell him to apply more glue this time.

I had the same issue with my 08 EX-L. Fell maybe about 4 time was driving me nuts!!...I used the permatex rear view mirror glue in three occasions...the definition of insanity "insanity is doing the same thing over and over a again and expecting different results."

My fix was: remove the metal piece from the rear view mirror. Sand the side that goes toward the glass with 1000 grit sandpaper. Make sure all the glue is removed and sand it for a few mins until the surface is completely sanded. Now using the same 1000 grit paper sand without too much pressure the black area on the glass as well. Wipe with a dry paper towel both surface (metal piece & black area on the glass) to remove any dust.

Apply permatex epoxy, carefully mix it and cover the dashboard area for any drip. Apply less than a penny size drop of the epoxy on the metal piece and carefully lay it on the glass and keep it in place for a about two days being held in place by Blue painter's tape. Make sure to lay the metal piece on the right direction!!!..if not ur rear view mirror will ended up facing the dashboard instead. After two days re-attach the rear view mirror to the metal piece.

Mine has been in place for the last three years....thanks God!
