I've search the forum and found only one thread...not too imformative. I want to get a extra set of key and fob.

Where can I get the key cut? From a dealership only? or from a local locksmith?

Do you really have to get the key programmed from the dealership? I thought it was like GM's and FORD's put a original key first turn to ON and then with in 15 seconds put in unprogrammed cut key and turn ON and wait for Key light to blink and thats it?

My Cadillac is so easy to program FOB (its in one of the menus in the trip comptur no lesss than a minute to program the FOB and Key)

On ebay I can get the key for $20 (OEM) and the FOB for $35?

Any Idea on how to program the FOB?

What caused you to think it was like GM or Ford? Inquiring minds want to know.

FWIW, I've seen customers at Honda get keys programmed and complaining about the cost and hassle. Suggest you visit one of the several dealers in the Carson area and be done with it.

Try calling locksmiths in your area, but you will probally have to go to the dealer, as the key cutting machine is expensive, so most locksmiths will not buy it.

I think that Honda went to this key type to try to reduce vehicle theft.

I got a spare key for $35. at the dealer. (Norm Reeves in Huntington Beach) the immobilizer must be programmed. We did have a member in San Diego who could not find a reasonable priced dealer who did find a locksmith who had a programming machine.

The fob can be programmed yourself. If you do a search here at the Odyclub, the instructions are in several threads.

pleasantly suprised....relatively speaking

I have a 2001 EX, and lost my key. I really didnt know what the options were and thank goodness remembered to check this forum. I had called my dealer and a locksmith and had a quote of 150 and 169 respectively. After reading these posts, I was prepared to negotiate them down, when suprisingly the service tech said that as long as I have a key that works, the parts department can scan the existing key's code, cut and program a new key for $33!!! I was shocked.
The parts department manager told me that not all dealers have this machine that "reads" the code and allows them to make new keys without a full reprogram. He did infer that the newer Hondas keys would require a more entailed/expensive process.
Good luck.

Yup, transponder key technology puts locksmiths out of the ignition key cutting business. Most dealers will 'program' a spare key for the cost of the blank provided you have at least one good key. I'm surprized there isn't programming instruction here?
