help! With all the drivers in my family, one key to my 2011 honda odyssey touring is missing and now I have to replace the driver one six button remote key. Am I able to program the key myself once I buy it or do I have to have the dealership program the key? Also how long does it take to program a key? Thank you for any help.

From the Honda USA Automotive frequently asked questions:

How can I get a replacement key for my Honda vehicle?

Any Honda dealer can provide you with a replacement key.

Everything has to be done through the dealer. Then need your keycode. If they let anyone just program keys, there would be a lot more stolen Odysseys!

I am going through the same for our 2007 and there are two things:

  • The keys have a chip that needs to be programmed by the dealer. The dealer also cuts the key.
  • The remote can be programmed by the owner.
Since your key has the remote built in it, I am not sure if you need to do the second step.

What nicomtl said is correct. Once at the dealer, he will program the smart chip and cut the key to work with your van.

The buttons on the key (i.e. lock, unlock, sliding doors, etc.) will come with the default settings. You could probably ask the dealer to change the behavior of each button to your preferences or program that yourself when you get home.

150 bucks for a replacement key, huh?!? I need to make sure I don't lose one of my two keys!

:(
I always try and get a 3rd key "thrown in" as part of the deal when buying a new car. That is how I got 3 keys and 3 remotes + a valet key to the Ody. It costs them next to nothing to produce and they get to pass it off as a selling point.
