I wanted to reset PCM for a while, to see if it will help to fix "downshift pull" - kinda thing you can have with manual trans when downshifting too fast, but it should not be there with automatic transmission. Still, many Odys have that, and mine wasn't the exception, it was quite annoying - coming to a stop and feeling trans shifting hard, trying to stop van with the engine. I don't like that, it is not tractor-trailer, I'd rather use my brakes to stop.
Anyhow, not having bidirectional tool, I was looking for a way to reset PCM without tool.
Stumbled on the thread where a self-proclaimed Honda technician was explaining how to reset PCM without tool - disconnect battery terminals from battery, and connect them to each other for 15 min, then do standard idle-learn procedure - let car idle for 15 min, etc.
At first I did not believe that guy, thought he was another BSr, because it has been discussed a billion times here, how you'll need a bidirectional scan tool to do a reset after Throttle Body cleaning, etc..
Yesterday I noticed that battery terminals needed some cleaning, cleaned them, then remembered that post about resetting PCM, and decided to give it a try, nothing to lose, right?
So, I jumped my disconnected battery terminals with jumper cable, and left it overnight.
Well, it worked. In the morning I connected terminals, started the van, let it run for 15 min withouth powering anything - AC, radio, etc. Idle was rough and unstable at first, lurking around 1100-1200 RPM, then it stabilized after a while.
The biggest surprise was a transmission behavior. It changed completely, I mean day and night difference.
Now, accelerator pedal need to be barely touched to speed up the van to city speed limits - 35-40 MPH. Upshifts are very quick, seamless. RPMs are much lower, never go above 2200 unless you want them to ( before, I needed to rev it up to 2500-3000 to keep up with traffic ), downshift pullback disappeared completely. Van now drives just like my both brand-new Accords did, shifting quick and smoothly, very enjoyable.
I noticed that radio audio settings ( bass, treble, etc ) did not reset. Though, I had to punch in radio code. Power doors and windows did not reset either, not sure if they can be reset on this particular vehicle.
Hopefully this fix will last for a while. If not, I am willing to do it once a week, not that hard )
Honda Odyssey obviously has software problems. I'll stop by at stealership when I have a few hundred dollars to waste, will ask them to check if my PCM needs any updates.
