I have a 2007. I am getting it repainted soon and I want to remove the roof rails before I take it to get painted. I was going to get new ones but apparently they are discontinued and mine are in good physical shape, but aesthetically they look bad. The last painter before I bought it, did a bad tape job and there's white overspray and the black factory paint is coming off, and there's some spray angles that would be much easier to get at with them removed. So I am just going to refinish them myself. My question is once I remove the rails and the black rubber strip, is there any danger of it leaking? Should I use seam sealer even if it's not needed just for extra protection before I put the rails back on?

The rubber trim strips and the roof racks do not seal the body seam. So removing them will not cause a leak But you have a good idea to clean out the seams and seal them. Good preventive maintenance!
