How many have needed to use this (pg 215 owner's manual)
After awhile driving up and down hills, I tried to shift to First (1) and the trany did not move from Drive. I used the Shift Lock Release as per manual instruction and it worked OK. But the manual also recommends to have it checked if you ever have to do this. Has this happened to you guys???

Have you ever shifted into (1) before?

The Odyssey's weird shifter articulation makes it difficult for some people to shift below (D4).

You have to pull the shifter towards you to get out of park and go down through (D4), but you DO NOT PULL THE SHIFTER TOWARDS you to shift below (D4) through (D1).

Just pull the shifter downwards, without pulling it toward you.

<<< I think that's how it goes >>>

Good luck!

Okay, this is how I do it:

(1) P to R to N to D4 pull toward you and down.

(2) D4 to D3 pull down.

(3) D3 to D2 pull toward you and down.

(4) D2 to D1 pull toward you and down.
Hey guys!! (and ladies!) What a discussion! This is one of my pet peeves with the Ody but... don't you think it's a little bit strange to have to explain how to use the shifter?

Things like this should be intuitive and not require any thought. Am I crazy or what?

I just saw the new CRV and its shifter pokes straight out of the dash towards you. Honda needs a new engineer in that department!

Actually, if the Ody's shift gate pattern were layed out on a floor shift, none of us would have a problem with it. It's not a big deal in the long run, it's just different from what almost every other manufacturer does with their column shift which is why it causes so much discussion.

Once you understand the rules, the shifter works very smoothly. The only thing I wish Honda had done is install another step below D4. I go past that to D3 from time to time.

Well I had the same problem! Had my 00 Ody for a year and a half and I guess I haven't tried putting it into anything below 4 before!
Thought I had a problem, as I naturally tried to downshift by pulling in and moving down!
Reading though here its pleasing to find I am the one with the problem and the shifter and tranny are working fine! had no problem after reading this.
I switched to AMSOIL synthetic last year, was worried that may have been a problem, but all was fine.
Have over 240,000km on the tranny, shifts nice and smooth still, hopefully the AMSOIL will keep it that way!! (I have a feeling it was replaced earlier in its life long before I took over!)
